This is the kind of sunrise we like to see when we are supposed to have an airlift. We are waiting for the helicopter to fly in from Atlanta. Unfortunately, Atlanta is experiencing heavy fog. You never know how things are going to play out when you are relying on the weather to make it possible. Today will be a waiting game. We WILL be ready as soon as the pilot says "It's a GO". It is currently 30º on the mountain. Maybe this extra time will allow it to warm up a bit. It can get a bit cold under the helicopter.
Someone asked for a picture of the shirts. As soon as we get the shirts on the mountain and get them unloaded, I will post a picture. We have some really cool items for sale this year. Some of the items can be seen on the lodge website. Check out http://www.lecontelodge.com/store/. We even have the Hudson Bay blankets available for purchase. They are only for purchase from our online store. I hope to have some pictures of airlift for you tomorrow. In the mean time we are eating our pancakes and waiting patiently for the word to start. At least we have a beautiful day to enjoy on the mountain.

Once the airlift is complete, when do the Llamas start their trips to the lodge?

I live in Atlanta (brookhaven) and as I was putting out my feeders this am I looked up to watch the clouds. And I saw blue sky! Will let you know how things are looking down here if needed but you will probably know about the helicopter long before I can do my weather report! Guess it also depends on which part of this massive city they are taking off from. See you a few days into June! We have your gray skies and fog up here. I was once blessed by an old African witch doctor so I'll go outside and chant some to keep this dreary weather north of the Smokies so the airlift can proceed. I am impressed with what must surely be an enormous logistical accomplishment in planning and executing the lift ! Good luck.

Gilmer, your comment is a great example of why the comments continue to be closed. How freaking hard is it to be nice as has been asked.. repetitively! Jeeez!

Family of 5 leaving Minnesota tomorrow and climbing to LaConte on opening day. Any opinion if we should bring along those ice stabilizers or just waterproof hiking boots enough?

Barb, It's better to bring the ice stabilizers along and not need them than to not have them when it gets icy. I went up Trillium Gap Trail 10 days ago and there was about 100 feet of solid irregular ice covering the entire trail near the top.

Yes, you should always be prepared for any kind of weather hiking. The Smoky Mnts. are notorious for dramatic changes in the blink of an eye. Good luck with the are lift Allyson, hope all goes safe and peaceful. I've experienced three myself so know first hand how crazy it can get. ~ Peace to All

What is the timetable for having the water pump near the office turned on? Thanks

It should be on this weekend. The spring is running fine. If the pump is not on, you can go to Trillium about 30 ft an the spring is on the right.

Yep, I can imagine swirling chopper blades would add an extra nip to the air.
