Alex due back today

3/1/2011

Low 22, with almost 4 inches of rain in 48 hours.  There is patchy ice from the cold temperatures last night, but no new snow fall.   Alex should be heading up today. His last day will be March 9, when the crew for the 2011 season will start making their way up. Allyson will be posting again for the season when Alex leaves.  There will be five new employees this year.

First of all, let me say YAY! So happy to hear that Alex will be on the mountain until the 9th. We'll be hiking up on the 8th, so we'll just make it to be able to meet him. It'll be great to be able to thank him in person for this wonerful blog thats kept me in great anticipation while I was waiting for our trip to get here. That being said, my fiance and I are SW Floridians who don't have any hiking experience but exercise daily & are young & in great health & will be hiking up the mountain in about a week. Im looking for any advice that you novices may have to offer. We are just going to be doing a day trip up Alum Trail, for now. Thank you in advance, everyone, for your help =}

Tricia,
We hiked to Leconte for the first time last fall. We did it one Friday and loved it so much we went back the following Friday. The first hike we went fast. We run and walk a lot. The next day our legs were so sore. The next hike we took our time and enjoyed the veiws. We were not sore the next day. The first hike, when we reached the top couldn't beleive the temp change. Next hike we took extra clothing, was very comfortable. Take cash or a credit card Leconte accepts to buy Leconte shirts and hats.
Research the hike so you don't miss anything on the trail and on top of Leconte. One of the best hikes we have ever done.
Enjoy.

By the way...When will we get to see the new Leconte design for the shirts, hats and sweat shirts?

I flew over the mountains this morning on my way onto Atlanta. Beautiful site with the peaks rising above the low hanging clouds. It should be a wonderful day for a hike up. Wish I were doing that myself!

Tricia,
Like Tony said, take your time and enjoy the views. There will most likely be quite a change in temperature so take extra clothes. I would suggest lightweight items that you can layer as needed and won't be too heavy to carry.
Water, snacks, light lunch and camera should be all you will need. Maybe some treking poles. My wife and i have found them very helpful. Especially coming down. We use two and they help take a lot of pressure off the knees. Since the lodge won't be open yet i'm not sure about buying t-shirts. Maybe Allyson will answer that for you. Once you do your hike, and get hooked on LeConte, you might want to start planning an overnight stay for next year or even put your name on the waiting list for this year. Staying on top is an awesome experience.
Have a safe and enjoyable hike and let us all know how it goes.
