And one day, out of the blue, I started to run - simply because I wanted to. I've always done whatever I felt like doing in life. People may try to stop me, and convince me I'm wrong, but I won't change. Murakami
Morning y'all,

It's a beautiful, clear morning up top. The high yesterday reached 21 degrees. The low dipped down to 7 degrees. It was 16 degrees and clear at 7am observation. The mountain received no new precipitation and there is about 4 inches of snow left up top. The trails are starting to get slick, so be prepared to slip a bit if you're planning on hiking up. The roads are currently closed, but you can check on their status on the Park Service's twitter feed. Enjoy the day!

Sometimes I hesitate to post any comments here for I don't want to appear to be trying to dominate the site, which I am not and certainly couldn't if I tried. I have always made every attempt to limit my remarks to those pertaining to the lodge, although I have a couple of times felt compelled to answer, if only briefly, particular comments that seemed directed at me personally. I enjoy reading all the comments here whether they be short or long. There are a lot of sincere, nice, and thoughtful people here. I consider them friends and fellow admirers of hiking, the Park, and the lodge. I appreciate the opportunity to post my own comments here. Just about an hour or so ago I received an email message on my main address that was quite hateful and spiteful to say the least. I suppose I left myself open to this as I did post my email address on my site a few times. So be it. I will not go into the content of that message here, but did so at length on my site. I want only to say that I appreciate all who make comments here and that I hope these continue for a long time to come. It's a pleasant thing to read everyone's remarks, etc. I think that we all support each other with our interest for what this site is all about. I'll bet that if anyone is out there hiking on Mt. Leconte today they're having quite an adventure ! Good day to all !

Thanks for "Taking The High Road"! There are always a few......... BUT "we" shouldn't retreat because of them.
ENJOY!

Continue to comment Doug. They are insightful. I love coming on daily to see the photos and read JPs enlightening blog. I tend to share my adventures also...maybe I shouldn't. I was thinking to myself, on the way to work, that I would log on and comment about the last few days blog where folks got on and seemed to be mocking a few others who blog. I was going to say that the comments were rude and childish and didn't belong on this site. I guess they were dealt with while I was at work, thank you...whoever deleted the content. There is no reason to make others feel uncomfortable for enjoying a blog, or adding their heartfelt thoughts. I am thrilled to have this blog, I enjoy it daily and get a lot of useful info from it. Please keep it going JP, do not let the immature folks get the best of it. It is a wonderfully created space! THANK YOU ALL!

Elisabeth: Take your own advice: "continue to comment" ! Your comments are heartfelt, too ! This site, as stated by the management, is intended for topics related directly to affairs of Leconte Lodge and subjects that are relevant to it, such as hiking in particular; After all, we do have to hike to get up there ! I don't actually know JP as well as I might, but I think I can assume correctly that he will not allow certain disparaging and harsh remarks discourage him from doing his caretaker's duties, and his philosophies are indeed his own, and they are interesting, profound, and well received. We don't always have to agree with him in totality, nor do we all share his feelings, but we do all have varying degrees of sincerity for our comments, feelings, and intentions and I believe with much conviction that we all do actually possess a great deal of what JP writes about, whether it be enlightening quotes, old or new, or his own personal insights. Each of us possesses unique perspectives, some unusual, others deep and meaningful, but all nonetheless valuable to the enrichment of the site, not to mention its continuing informative nature ! As for those "other" comments, I addressed them clearly and succinctly on my own site (link by my name) and they amount to far less than a puff in the wind !! So, your comments, I'm sure, are as welcome as any. Good to read your opinions. Have a great afternoon !

doug y, I love your voice here. I keep up with this blog appreciatively, loving the creative muse that lives here, the spirit of those who treasure being outdoors. The negative ones will come; it's inevitable. Please ignore them.

Just keep in mind. If you respond to ''THEM'' you only encourage ''THEM'' If there is no feedback, regardless how small, then it normally goes away. Great pics over the last few days with the snow JP. Noaa says we may have snow here in L.A.(lower alabama) Tuesday and Tuesday night. Not holding my breath waiting on it.

Doug, by no means do you dominate this site, you are only 49.9% of the blog.

Doug, I enjoy reading your comments about your experiences just as I do from all the others that post here. The negative ones posted, I ignore them. Don't let a few "bad apples" spoil the site for the other 99.9 % of us that enjoy it.

Where's JP when you need him. We need some editing. I'm sure he'll take care of things. Surprised JP that there's so little snow remaining on top. With all these cold temps, it seems we should be entitled to more of the white stuff.

No one pays attention to the ugly when most on here are such good people. Can anyone recommend a great place to stay in May after our trek up to LeConte

How about renting a cabin in the forest in Gatlinburg after your LeConte hike! This one accommodates 2 people, I know of larger cabins too!

I don't really get some of the comments about the so-called "mocking" remarks. As a fan of sarcasm, I can appreciate some of it. Lighten up folks.
I've been checking out this blog, nearly every day, for about 2½ years and I enjoy reading the updates from the Lodge. Sometimes the "comments" section is interesting, sometimes tedious. I rarely post anything, maybe 5 or 6 remarks overall. Sometimes it seems like some of the frequent "commentors" take things a bit too serious perhaps. Have fun! LeConte is a beautiful place. I love it too but maybe a "less is more" approach is a good suggestion for some. Maybe I am a "bad apple" for speaking up. Not for me to decide.
That's my bit.
Thanks JP for keeping the lodge safe. Love your posts...
