Studying some french and it's starting to rain a little, The high today was 51. I'm going to leave early tomorrow, carrying down about a 50lb pack. Depending on how much it rains and if it stays in the 40's, like now, near most all the snow might be gone by tomorrow afternoon. I'll be playing in the Big south fork and Pisgah this week, and checking out a fantastic jazz/funk band from Switzerland at the bijou theatre sunday night. Have a good week all.

I don’t blame you a bit for moving on. Le Conte soon will be overrun with fools, if it isn’t already. In September I will be one of them for an overnighter with my 33-year-old son.

I can't believe all the snow will be gone! I checked the NWS snow depths not that long ago, and it said 24". I guess it doesn't take that long to melt, but it seems so permanent when its that deep.

WOw what a heavy pack! We have all the snow in central and northern Ohio. We were to get a dusting MOnday afternoon and possibly a bit of sleet. 1/2 of sleet later and 4 inches within 4 hours we have our little bit of snow and sleet!! Caught everyone by surprise. Lots of crazy drivers not wanting to slow down and their insurance paid that price!! So ready for spring!! Can't wait to be back in the Smokies for vacation!

I have truly enjoyed your blog and especially the pictures all winter. Thank you for that. I will be visiting the Smokies and LeConte for the first time this Sugust. Any recommendations on which trail to take to the top?

SJ, the Alum Cave trail is the shortest trail and has an elevation gain of approximately 2,800 feet. Check the website hikinginthesmokys.com for detailed information about each trail. You will enjoy the experience

SJ- if you go the facts page on this site, it will give you information on each trail leading to the lodge. Hope this helps. See you up top.

Earnest..enjoyed your comments. I sometimes envy Alex his choice of free spiriting. What day will you be on LeConte. Just wondering as I have reservations with my brother for the 11th.

I have thoroughly enjoyed your photos and commentary. Have a blast in the Big South. Laurel Fork trail is one of my favorites. Honey Creek loop, not so much. Hope you keep us posted on your European adventure. Comments are closed.
