It's a beautiful, clear day up top. The high yesterday reached 26 degrees. The overnight low was 21 degrees. It was 25 degrees and clear at 7am observation. The mountain received no new snow, but there is still some patchy snow remaining. The trails are still a bit icy, so be sure to pack some sort of traction devices if you intend to reach the summit. Get out there and enjoy the day!

Don't mean to be negative but I spend a lot of time in the Smokies and I understand now why the Mt Leconte area has bear problems. Improper food storage. These hikers need to understand leaving food in the open areas attracts bears. Food should be stored in trees per park regulations. I love these bears and hate to see problems arise from so many people leaving food at the lodge unstored. Maybe you should post something concerning this. A treat left for JP may cost a bear his life. Think about it. Thanks

Steve, you raise a valid concern. I would think odor proof bags would be a good option for leaving treats -- if they actually work, that is. I did buy some before s backpacking trip last summer, but I have no way of confirming whether or not they are actually effective

When I say in trees I don't mean hinging on a limb, bears climb trees. Needs to be placed over rope between trees or hung on cables in mid air where it's not reachable

Steve I've been hiking here since 1960 and been around Bears a great deal . I love and respect them . Never would do anything to harm them

Cool , bet don't underestimate the nose of a bear. One scent of the food your leaving around and possibly a problem. Don't think they can't smell through an air tight container. Sounds like bad practices up there.

Been reading a little on the ability of a bear to smell through air tight containers. I myself have been hiking the Smokies since the 70's, Ron you have me by ten years. You guys need to read up on food storage around wildlife and follow park rules. PLEASE Comments are closed.
