and it haunts me so, like a dream that's linked to all the stars above.

I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion.
Morning,

We had another mild day yesterday. It is starting to feel like winter in the morning again. The high was 35. It was 27 and clear at observation. The overnight low was 17.

I went for a run down Alum yesterday and saw about 15 day hikers. Unfortunately, the beauty of my run was overshadowed by disgust. I picked up 5 water bottles along they way. As one of the day hikers commented, some people just don't deserve beauty. Thanks to everyone who isn't a lazy slob and can respect their surroundings. PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT.

Bret, JP has mentioned Christmas several times in his previous post. But with all due respect Bret just being up there is like Christmas all the time. Ones beauty of a lit up Christmas tree is anothers beauty of a beautiful glowing sunset. Merry Christmas Bret!

Bret,
I also neglected to mention Saturnalia, Ramadan, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah and Rohatsu Sesshin. You're welcome to jump to your own conclusions, but this blog is about the mountain and I've chosen to keep private matters private.

My wife and I on several occasions have picked up trash along the trail, with disgust might I add. Just dont understand why folks do not respect the beauty of our parks ! Thanks to the many park volunteers and people like ourselves that take the time to keep these mtns. prestine !

I know what you mean about the empty water bottles. Its as if some one cares about their own health (by drinking clean water) and is unconcerned about the health of their planet. Thanks for picking them up JP, have a good day!

JP, where did that quote "I wanted to live deep ......" come from?
Thanks.

Lets just face facts JP. Society and people in general are both in serious decline. I feel pretty much the same when people sneek onto our property and fish and then leave their bait containers and beer cans. They should be flogged

People never cease to amaze me. If they don't care any more about the mountains than to throw down their garbage, why do they bother hiking up a trail in the first place? Imagine what would be left for us to enjoy if there were no park service. As the old saying goes, take only pictures and leave only footprints!

We too have picked up others trash left behind....I prefer to think of it as accidental and not purposefully left there. :) But then my glass prefers to be half full too ;)

Have to add my comments to all those above regarding trash on the trails; Nothing infuriates me more than finding garbage of any kind along a trail ! Even the smallest piece angers me; Yes, thanks to all those who pick it up; I carry a small bag with me whenever I'm hiking and sometimes fill it with trash to carry out; Thoughtless, inconsiderate, uncaring people; Thanks JP and others; Nice peaceful photo today; Wish I was there.

I don't understand people either; the water bottles weigh more going in than coming back out; why not just pack them back in your backpack and bring them out.
You have these such Amazing places to be able to experience and its people like this that ruin it for us all.
We have some beautiful rock cliffs on our lake here in SC; and last time we were there; people had left such as mess of trash everywhere. Eventually; the park system will try to close it all off for everybody.
Anyway, thanks for all your Awesome pictures and enjoy the Beauty around you. I envy you; you've got to have the best job. Hope to make this Alum hike again sometime soon.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

I agree with you all about the garbage, it is just disgusting. I too pick up the trash of others, and I have chosen to volunteer with the Adopt a Trail program with the NPS. If anyone is interested in volunteering with the park, contact Christine_Hoyer@NPS.gov. And last but not least, BEAUTIFUL photos JP, keep em coming:)
