And More Snow...

4/2/2011

Luckily, we awoke to only 1/2" of snow this morning.  The high yesterday reached only 26 with the low last night around 20.  Be advised there is a wind advisory for today.  Here are a few photos I selected from around camp yesterday.  The first shows our sense of humor high on this mountain.  Please bear with me over the next week as I learn my way around the blog world! I hope you have a great weekend!

I assume the March 32nd date is the equivalent of having a birth date of February 29th and age only one year every four years.

Hiking to LeConte this month as a day trip and will probably use Rainbow or Bullhead. Not familiar with either trail. Recommendations welcome.

Hiked Boulevard and Alum Cave on previous trips.

It actually took me a couple of seconds to get it! LOL That's a gorgeous shot of the tree with snow. I can see why you love being there, with spectacular views everywhere you look. Beautiful!

Hello Meredith and welcome to the blogosphere. Love the March 32 idea. Great April Fools joke to hikers when they first arrive up top. I can imagine some of the perplexed faces.

Harold,
Rainbow UP, Bullhead DOWN is the way we hike that pair. One parking lot serves both. Make it a point to take a leisurely lunch at the falls. Just below West Point, where Bullhead and Rainbow meet, there is a sign marking a side trail that cuts back hard left to Rocky Spur. Take it. If you are alone there is space to sit and take in the view from there. There isn't much space to go around, however. Stay on the side trail and it will dump you back onto the Rainbow Falls trail a short distance above where you left the trail. It costs you almost no time to take in the views. Take a break at West Point before the last hard push to the Lodge. West Point is a three way intersection, your route is via Rainbow which is a hard LEFT as you climb into West Point.

When you hike down you will hit the same intersection. Rainbow leaves West Point hard right, Bullhead is more or less straight ahead as you descend from the lodge. Views right show you Rocky Spur below.

Around midway down Bullhead find a large stone slab of sorts. If the vegetation isn't fully in, you may get a view from there. When the trail ends, take a right along the gravel road back to the parking lot.

Have a great trip!

@ the Bierbaums RE: the bears. There is a bear deterrent spray on the market that you can carry in a holster on your belt. It's supposed to be effective to 30'. I've never had to use it but always carry it with, just in case.

Hi Doug, welcome back. We wondered where you disappeared to? You would be correct. The highest peak on LeConte is 6593.

Hi Ya'll, I'll be visiting this saturday April 9. I'm coming in from Baltimore MD and was wondering if anyone needed anything from this neck of the woods or points between? I know Chris is from this area, please let me know and I will bring it up. Look forward to seeing Ya'll and the mountain. Stephen

We love to come when it's cold!, But the ice and snow made our trip up and coming down one of the most adventurous trip's. We allway's bring a group up there with us, and there was a church group up there that same night. In the morning everyone was slipping and sliding around camp, I witnessed several people slp and slide and fall on there bottom's. Also, that morning a helicopter showed up to deliver stone it was really cool to see that. After we all started heading out one of the ladies in the church group fell and broke her ankle I think. I heard later that they got her on that helicopter, and flew her down to a staging area to meet an ambulance. We met alot of folks hiking in, and we almost felt jealous that they were hiking in, and we were hiking out.It was a beautiful, fabulous, exciting hike back to the trailhead! And I just can't waite to go again!
