Morning all! Well, it's a VERY windy day today on the mountain. Yesterday's blue skies have been swallowed up by a soupy mess of clouds and fog. The high yesterday reached 53 and the low was 33, currently it is 40 degrees, but the howling wind will make that feel much cooler, especially on the higher portions of the trails. Fortunately, the temperature didn't dip below freezing last night, so all of the ice that melted yesterday did not refreeze! Everyone pack rain gear today (let's be honest- pack rain gear anytime you hike) and nobody get blown off the trail on the way up!

Thank you for diligently posting each and every day, it gives us hikers peace of mind to know the exact conditions. Myself and about 8 other guys are day hiking up tomorrow for Good Friday so I'm glad to hear that there isn't any more ice! See you all tomorrow! Fog and rain, rain and fog, two ingredients for a nice relaxing atmosphere at the Lodge ! When I'm up there is such conditions I feel such an intense level of relaxation and disconnection from civilization ! A week from right now I'll be finishing off another great meal in that wonderful dining hall I love so much ! Oh yes, very good advice; ALWAYS carry a rainsuit when hiking in the Smokies. G'evening.

We day hiked up Alum today. The last mile or so to the Lodge was VERY windy. Was very spooky how the wind was blowing the fog and clouds around the bends of the mountain. At one point we had to hunker down on a narrow section because wind was blowing so hard. But was a fantastic day! Trail is in good shape other than a little mud and the areas that really need the upgrades slated to start next month.
