Tuesday is usually one of the calmer days of our week up here on Mt. LeConte but today sure wasn't! Our 50/42 yesterday was quickly forgotten. Our nuisance bear Sly Peaches (group effort on naming), who was working quite admirably on his hospitality skills, was trapped last night. The NPS bear team composed of Joe, Ryan, and Jessica came up early this morning to check him out, document, and collar him before turning him back out into the wild ( thank you guys again!)
The bears in the park should NOT be fed by people, this includes any trash you leave behind. For your (and the bear’s) own safety please remain a good distance away from bears and talk loudly, make noises, and slowly walk away from them. We have had on/off showers today and no sun whatsoever. Even though we only received .36” of rain yesterday it's definitely chillier due to the cloud cover and the chance of precipitation is increasing during the week. Pack accordingly!

Aw. He looks so sweet. I remember back in the early 70's a friend and I where camping at Cosby Camp Ground. A bear came in the middle of the night and tore open a metal cooler that another camper had left outside. A park ranger showed up and said he will hit it with a baseball bat on the nose and that will make him go away. I still remember that as being cruel and shocking and disturbing. Anyway I hope the bear the will be treated well. It's us humans that are the problem, Thanks for your posts. I check them everyday while at work.

So tell us about Sly! How old, what'd he weigh? Did he get an ear tag? What number was it? Where was he released? Does he sing bass or is he a soprano? I saw a whole messa bears at DisneyWorld and was surprised at how well they sing!

Sly looks awfully shy. I hope he rehabituates into a wild thing again.

When will people learn feeding wildlife is detrimental to their survival. Hope Sly is healthy. Give us some update on approx age and size, etc.

Thanks to the entire LeConte crew for an awesome overnight stay on 4/18. You guys rock! If Ryn would like the phone number for the Cades Cove Cellars in Townsend, I'd be glad to send it to her.
