April.23.2016. Smells like wet dog

4/23/2016

We had some crazy rain up here!

It was 58 then dropped to 43 degrees during lunch, rainy cold, and whenever you talked you looked spooky.

It was 38 overnight, and although the rain had stopped its misty, wet, and super wet.

Bring up your rain gear today!

The rain will definitely slick up the trails so take your time and be cautious.

Smells like a wet dog......does that mean bears?!? Or, it just smells like a wet dog. Not a pleasant smell either way. I imagine, after hiking in the rain ALL day the day we came up, we smelled like a couple of wet dogs as well! *smiles* Have a good weekend! The park could use some rain.

Synthetic shirts, especially if they're trapped under a rain jacket, can take on an unpleasant odor during a wet hike. They have a tendency to hold bad odors. I remember trying to wash out cycling jerseys in a motel sink with soap after a long, hot day on a multi-day bike trip. They tended to retain a bit of B.O. That's why they were often referred to as "permastink" jerseys.

Still, the odor of a wet dog is far worse in my opinion.

"Smells like Wet Dog" would be a good title for a Bluegrass tune. I'm thinking a banjo riff that's similar to the main guitar riff on the Nirvana classic "Smells like Teen Spirit"...
We've hiked enough times in the rain over the years to know that wet smell that gets into everything (Even the stuff covered by 2 layers of waterproofing). Plus there's always the decision of "do I get wet from rain or from sweat from being inside a rain jacket". As long as my pack's covered I usually choose the rain!

I made the same decision years ago. Hiking UPHILL at regular speeds I don't wear a rain jacket. DOWN or perhaps flat, I'll wear one, but this discomfort of being stinking hot isn't worth it.

I am considering hiking up on Sun, is construction work on Alum Cave trail totally completed and is that the trail open on the weekends?

Hamp... Work on Alum isn't finished. The Trails Forever crew got to Inspiration Point last year (just below Alum Cave Bluff). They don't begin again until May 2nd, so the trail is open every day until then.

Hamp, if you are the person who had to give up his October 2015 lodge reservation due to chemo treatments, I am the one who got the night of October 27th. I hope this finds you doing well and you get to make the hike up on Sunday. Alum trail restoration is not finished. But, the trail is open until some time in May. Then I believe closed M -Th. I think details are on the lodge's home page or the GSMNP site. Did you get your lottery reservation for this year? Just wondering! Have a good evening!

"Real men (and women)" don't mind getting stinking hot, It's a rite of passage essentially.

Yep! You are right Phillip! Getting a little bit "stinky" never never hurt no one. In fact, it could be downright fun! Growing up, and while out on my grandparents farm, my brother and I used the have "cow patty" fights as one way of entertaining ourselves. Sometimes those patties weren't quite done, if you know what I mean! ;) LOL
