It snowed overnight! A 31 day was overcast, moving the clouds along for an amazing view of the sunset. A clear night transformed into a 23 degree mist, gathering snow on our doorsteps. Right now it is misty and cold. Hwy 441 Newfound Gap Road, access road to Alum Cave and Boulevard trails is currently closed. Check NPS twitter feed for updates:https://twitter.com/smokiesroadsnps. Cherokee Orchard Road for Rainbow Falls and Bullhead is open as is Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail for Trillium Gap Trail.  Sunset last night. If you venture up here today please pack warm, waterproof, gaitered, and bring foot- gear (ice traction will be needed).
Safety above all else guys! Watch out your fellow hikers also.

my name is david dayton just wandering roads still closed anyone coming up alum bluff cave trail still slick up there i was coming up sat or sunday looks like sunday be better

We will be coming up Sunday....I know we still need warmth and waterproofing, but think there will still be ice? We don't have yaktrax but will get some if needed! Thanks....sorry for the question of inexperience. :)

Emily... temps on LeConte can be 20+ degrees colder than in the valley. This time of year, snow & ice can remain in the most inopportune locations on the trail. YakTrax cost a lot less than a trail rescue & emergency room bill, and they're pretty light in your pack. I carry mine from October thru most of April, just in case! As the old saying goes, "An ounce of prevention..." Comments are closed.
