TUESDAY, JANUARY 10th, 2023Good Morning, Y’all!
It looks like it will be another awesome day on Mt LeConte. The temperature this morning was 28 degrees, the skies are blue, and the moon is setting in the west over the office roof. It should be another beautiful day on the mountain! For excitement today I have decided to do something that I have never done before—bake homemade cinnamon rolls! My mom was famous in the county where we lived for her cinnamon rolls, but I never learned the art. Today is the day! So—I’ll get to work on the project and try to share some pictures with you tomorrow. From High On LeConte, WILDCAT/Bert

Monday, January 9th, 2023Good Morning,
It’s foggy again this morning, but the temperature is only 24 degrees. This combination is creating frost on trees and bushes—a beautiful wintry world of white. Cherokee Orchard Road is supposed to be closed this week, so plan accordingly. This will make it difficult to get to Rainbow Falls, Bullhead, and Trillium Gap trailheads. The sun is trying to break through the clouds and the skies are clearing as I write this post—this will definitely brighten everything up on LeConte today! I hope that you have a marvelous MONDAY! WILDCAT SUNDAY, JANUARY 8th, 2023Good Morning, Y’all!
Just sitting up here on the mountain in fog drinking coffee and listening to Southern Blue Grass Gospel Music. The temperature on LeConte was 36 degrees with light rain and heavy fog! After a while pictures of the fog tend to all look the same! The views from Cliff Tops in the fog also all tend to look pretty much the same! If you should decide to go hiking today be sure to pack your rain gear. HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT JANUARY 7th, 2023Howdy, Folks!
It was another foggy, cloudy day on Mt LeConte. The temperature this morning was 27 degrees and I was some what optimistic and then the clouds rolled in. Obviously the pictures above and below were taken yesterday when the sun was shining! The deck in front of the office (above) is a great location to enjoy the sunshine between 9:00 AM and noon. After noon it’s shady and time to move. We got some rain today and it’s supposed to continue tomorrow. The trails have some icy spots, so it’s wise to carry some sort of traction device. Please be advised that the Cherokee Orchard Road will be closed Monday through Friday of next week for road maintenance. The weasel pictured below came to visit me on the porch and enjoy the sunshine yesterday. I thought that you might think that he is cute! Stay dry and warm!! WILDCAT/Bert FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 2023Good Morning , All!
There was a beautiful full moon waiting to greet me on the western horizon when I awoke this morning! The skies are clear and the temperature was 17 degrees! It looks like it will be a beautiful day for hiking and/or whatever it is that winter caretakers do. Our solar panels are really gonna love a second consecutive day of uninterrupted sunshine! That will make my day more enjoyable too. For all of you gormet chefs who are closely following this blog and asking me about my corn bread—this evening’s menu will feature leftovers! Leftover Hearty Beef Stew accompanied by Leftover Corn Bread! This will finish off the leftovers and I will be able to move on to other mountaintop culinary adventures. My Momma always told me to “waste not—want not!” The picture below is of the full moon setting in the West. I sincerely hope that all of you have an awesome day enjoying the sunshine! From High On LeConte, WILDCAT/Bert THURSDAY, JANUARY 5, 2023Good Morning, Friends,
Early this morning the alarm went off, I got out of bed, and the first thing that I saw was the moon setting in the west—and no clouds around it! Thank you, Lord! Please give us some sunshine today! And he did! So I did my morning chores, then went outside and found a sunny spot out of the wind, and just sat there and enjoyed the warm sunshine which we hadn’t seen for several days. And apparently our array of solar panels did the same! Because soon after lunch equipment that is dependent upon solar power began operating again! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! Enjoy the sunshine! WILDCAT WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4,2023Good Morning!
Loud thunder woke me up early. The wind was blowing and heavy rain falling. At 7;00 AM we had 1.6 inches of rain in the rain gauge! Please accept my apologies for posting this entry a day late. Our communication system at the lodge is operated on solar power as we have no “electricity “ such as you are accustomed to. Day after day of fog and clouds (no sunshine!) finally took it’s toll, and things shut down. On Thursday, December 5th, the clouds went away, the sun shone brightly and after lunch things began working better . Please pray for a few days of bright sunshine! WILDCAT/Bert JANUARY 3rd, 2023Good Morning, Everyone!
It’s WINDY and foggy here on LeConte this morning! The Park Service told me that there’s a wind advisory for today. The roads are still open, but may be closed later today. The temperature at this time (7:00 AM) is 47 degrees—a regular “heatwave “ like we haven’t seen for two or three weeks! The “big excitement “ at the lodge for yesterday was the show that the weasels were putting on for our visitors! One of the day hikers shared the picture above with me. (Thanks for sharing!) The other excitement was me taking my shower, but I don’t believe that anyone captured a picture of that. From High On LeConte, WILDCAT/Bert January 2, 2023Good Morning, Folks!
Well, we survived the holidays and now things are getting back to normal. “Normal “ is obviously foggy mornings and clearing skies in the afternoon. Our morning temperature today is 42 degrees and no precipitation in the past 24 hours. But watch out and pack your rain gear because more rain is forecast for the next few days! The roads and trails are open at the present time. I walked out to Myrtle Point yesterday and enjoyed the sunshine. At Apollo Overlook I was able to look over to the Newfound Gap parking area and watch the traffic. Yes, the roads are returning to normal! It looks like today would be a good day to clean the chimneys on the lamps. That’s the sort of project that always needs to be done around here. I hope that you have a great day!
