At Least We Have Light

3/17/2014

Filling lamps and trimming wicks is the chore on docket for today. We are sitting in a swamp land and the rain is still coming down. The mountain received .72" of rain over the last 24 hours. The low was 32º with a high of 38º. Most of the snow has melted and the trails have turned to mud.

Needless to say, we are not flying today. The mountain is socked in and the clouds are  going nowhere. We are hoping for good weather tomorrow. If we get a little bit of good weather we can fly for half a day if need be.

Welcome back!! 2013 was our first and, so far, only trip up Leconte, and we loved it. Great hill, great lodge and such nice people. Hope to be back soon.

Right you are, Norman. It is a beautiful mountain. I am partial to my native New England mountains, but I am looking forward to the day when I can walk in the Smokies again. Climbing Leconte was a wonderful "bucket list" experience.

Me and my cousin will be hiking up the mountain on the 25th and staying 2 nights at the lodge. This has been a trip we have been talking about for years and finally decided to take the endeavor. We are planning on hiking up Alum Cave trail. He was in the Army so he may be more prepared than me because this will be my first hike in the mountains. How far in advance and where can we check the weather for the hike. I am so excited, im counting down the days. Thanks

Keep counting, it is really worth it all. Stayed there 2 nights once myself many years ago. You will really enjoy it! Would love to do it again!

Robby: You have picked one of the best destinations and routes to take your first hike in the mountains, But I must warn you: it can be instantly addictive !! Oh, and do be prepared for snow and ice even then.

Is Rachael from Church Hill? She may have attended First Baptist Church if her mothers name is Debbie.

Looking forward to the daily update. Stayed the night several years ago in October. Touched the stars in the early mourning. Have day hiked many times, again in October. Enjoyed them all.

What kind of lanterns are used at the lodge? I've read they run off kerosene and was wondering if the odor is overwhelming. The dining room looks great lit up by lanterns at night.

A new season begins. I love reading the inspired memories of all the posters. Everyone trying to describe that perfect thing experienced on the mountain. When I hike up, I find my words never quite seem to say what I had hoped. And I am sure you others feel the same way. On my ordinary, same old days, I pull up this site, read the posts, and then dream. So here is to all you other posters, and dreamers. It will be a good year!
