Baby It's Cold Outside

3/24/2011

Picture
What a storm we had last night. I wore my ruby slippers to bed incase I woke up in Oz. I hope everyone in the low lands survived it ok. The storm pushed the warm weather out and brought in the cold. The low last night was 27. It is now 25 and dropping.

I have heard about most of the trails. The ice has melted on Boulevard. It may still have blowdowns, but it is passable. Trillium is fine. Alum is fine. Rainbow is clear. The only trail I have not heard about is Bullhead. There may be some blowdowns on it.

You have a wonderful blog with such beautiful photographs. I would like to bring a group from Atlanta to the lodge for a fall retreat. Is LeConte Lodge a gay/lesbian friendly destination?

Rae

Beautiful shot!
Great question Chris!

Chris, the Lodge is open to everyone. If you can pay for the room, you can stay the night or nights.

There's no place like home...There's no place like home...Sure thought about all of you last night. Glad you are safe this morning at your mountain home.

Beautiful picture!

In the words of Winnie The Pooh - "It was a blustery day!" It is back to winter here in NE Ohio also. Guess Spring is on hold for now.

Oh splendid! We'll begin searching for open dates to make reservations. One final question: Does the lodge have a hot tub or sauna among its ameneties? Thank you so much for the information.

Chris, Just a cold creek and a warm rock to lay out in the sun on.

Chip

My partner and I have stayed at the lodge twice and I highly recommend it as a get-away destination.

Chris, you need to do some research on The Lodge before you go. Not sure you know what you are getting into

Hauntingly beautiful picture!!

Chris

Thanks for your concern Scott. What do you mean? Our outdoor club is very active in backpacking, skiing, cycling, and many other activities. None of has ever experienced LeConte and a group of 8 or 10 are interested in planning a retreat someplace this fall. Is LeConte a good idea?

Jerry

Great picture!

Reminds me of this one my wife shot of me at Alum Cave last year.

Chris, what he means is...no running water at the lodge except an outdoor spigot. You're given a bucket and washbasin in your room. No electric either. You need to check the main lodge site out for further info:
www.lecontelodge.com

Mary Ellen

Chris-Yes, LeConte is a perfect place to plan your retreat. My wife, Gaye (yes that's her real name) and I held our committment ceremony at sunrise at Myrtle Point. It was beautiful and so is the staff at LeConte Lodge.

Chris
3/24/2011 05:10:30 am

Sounds exciting! We'll look at the web site. Thanks everyone.

scott
3/24/2011 05:16:22 am

Denise pretty much nailed it. Not a "lodge" by any means. No running water, electricity, heat, AC, and you cant drive there. But dont let me deter you. It's Heaven on Earth

Glen
3/24/2011 05:27:42 am

Hmmmmm. A wood-fired hot tub or sauna would be a nice addition. What do you think Allyson?

Lisa
3/24/2011 05:40:21 am

Sorry, but the Lodge is not open to everyone. Just because you can pay for the room doesn't mean you can get a reservation.

Bob
3/24/2011 05:53:25 am

Reservations are limited and fill up quickly.

High On LeConte
3/24/2011 05:59:47 am

Glen, you would not be the first to suggest that. AS for availability, if you are flexible and have more then one date you can hike up, we can find a spot. We had one this morning that we finally found a taker. They called this morning and got a spot for today.

I've tried several times and never been able to get a reservation at the lodge. LeConte is still a keen idea for your retreat though. You can stay at the backcountry shelter if you really like roughing it, or you can do a day hike and get a hotel room in Gatlinburg (most of which DO have hot tubs). G'burg also has a lively nightlife and you can drive over to Cherokee for the casino too.

Lisa

I sure hope my husband and daughter make it down the mountain safely today...

Millie

It's suppose to be even colder tonight. It sure would be nice to be tucked into one of those heavy wool blankets. Everyone stay toasty!

Jerry, your wife's photos are beautiful. The colors are really popping. Obviously a much better camera than my point & shoot. I always enjoy more photos of the LeConte experience. Thanks for sharing!

Mitch

Of course LeConte is gay/lesbian friendly. Why else do you think one of the trails is called "Rainbow Falls"? LOL! I can make that joke because I am GLBT.

Love the pics and can't wait to see everyone later this summer.

Robin

Chris, Mt Leconte is a very open-minded progressive outdoor venue. As many have attested here your group will be welcome. But you should also know that Leconte is not Club Hair Spray. Neither is it a 5-star resort. If your club wants a rustic weekend Leconte is an unbeatable place to go and the staff will treat you as kings and queens (no pun intended). Good luck and have a great time wherever you go.

Last year we were warned to bring ice pitons or snowshoes for the hike up Alum in the early spring. But my eight year old son made it in almost record time (for dinner) and the only real snow was across Boulevard and at camp. He is now nine and the hike is old hat. The pictures ARE beautiful and only raise our expectations higher for this year's stayover. BTW the water from the spigot is like none other and worth the walk to get there. We hope to bump into some of the friends from last year at spring break... See you soon!

The wonderful warmth is gone here in St. Louis and the cold is back. I was so enjoying getting outside and hiking. Come back warmth!

Everyone enjoy your hike up - the staff at the lodge are wonderful! Our family can't wait for July!

Left yesterday morning, and seeing the pictures of last night's weather aftermath, looks like we timed it just right to enjoy some of the first nice early spring warm-up. Awesome picture btw

Chris...be advised that you might have company in your room. I did the one time I spent the night-mice!!

I'll be staying at the lodge on June 14. Are there any restrictions about overnight parking at any of the trailheads going to LeConte?
