Baby Lily's First Trip Up the Mountain

8/3/2013

Our fellow crew member, Bethany, was super excited to have her family make there annual trip up LeConte. They brought 31 people this time, including baby Lily. Lily is Bethany's new niece, as of three months ago. When I walked into the lodge to meet the newest Houghton family member, she was cozy in the hammock they had improvised. I was so impressed I thought we should share it on the blog. Lily was having a good ole' time swinging back and forth. I must say, I was a bit jealous. They had a beautiful day for bringing her up the mountain. The sun was out for the better part of the day. The high yesterday was 65º with a low of 52º. It is currently partly cloudy with a hint of blue sky hanging around.

Happy baby. She was wishing she could get on some of the mashed potatoes.

I meant to add earlier that seeing young children visit the lodge, children of all ages, is a very good thing; the life of any facility, organization, club, or endeavor depends on getting youngsters interested in them. I especially enjoy encountering youngsters and their parents on various trails. Most always seem so full of life, anticipation, and glee. They're getting not only valuable experience out on the trails and in the outdoors, but often experiences that can only increase the quality of their lives. A young boy scout asked me not too lng ago why I wanted to go hiking with "old folks" ! Well, I could have given him a rather long lecture, but refrained from dong that and told him a brief bit about the lodge. Whether or not he ever checks it out or even goes there is something I'll probably never know. But I did tell him one thing and that is that I myself wasn't old - - I was "SEASONED" !!! Good evening all.

Our daughter turned 9 weeks old when we were up there in 08. We all had a great time!

How did your carry your 9 wo up the mountain? We are going to try a hike up with a woven wrap, but I'm curious what other people use to hike with newborns

Mama carried her up in an Ergo carrier in the front. She stayed cozy in there the entire time even through the rain and hail (!) we walked in to get back down the mountain.
