I always advise people to check out sunrise and sunset no matter what the conditions. The view can change in an instant. One minute you are socked in and the next minute you are witnessing one of the best sunsets we may have had in months. This is another reason it is so hard for us to tell you what the weather may be. Our weather changes on a dime. I always suggest to hikers to be prepared. Carry rain gear and an extra layer to put on when you get chilled. The one thing I have found over the last 11 years, you take what you get and be ready for it. I get emails all the time asking what kind of weather to expect a month from now. The answer is, " I don't know". I can usually tell you that we will be about 20º colder then the temperatures forecasted for the lower elevations. I hope this helps when planning for your next adventure in the outdoors. Just remember, make sure you are prepared.

Be prepared for rain this weekend. As Allison just said pack extra clothes to change if you get wet. If there is a wind things can change fast. I was up top in August and the heater felt good at the lodge. I always have a change of clothing (just in case). BE PREPARED!!!

Good luck Marc! Did my first hike earlier this month. It was awesome. Torential rain in the early am hours before our hike. Packed extra socks to change into as feet were wet because the trail was like a river. The dry socks felt great to change into. We put our extra change of clothes inside a plastic bag inside our pack just in case it rained while we were on the trail. Have a great hike and happy birthday!

We get 2 beautiful pictures today. Lucky us!! Have a great day and enjoy that mountain for me. lt couldn't have been stated any clearer: Atop Mt. Leconte, at the lodge specifically, the weather conditions can and will change "on a dime" ! The simplest and purest advice is: "pack a good rain suit, a dry change of clothing, and accept whatever nature has to give you on any particuylar day" Of course, good gear won't hurt; I just spent a great deal of cash updating the remainder of my old gear, which remains usable and functional, but now I'm ready for the winter hiking season, probably my favorite. I intend to get in as much trekking before January when I'll get that "bionic knee" !! G'day.

We have been fortunate to have good weather on our hikes up LeConte. However, just in case, we buy 2 gallon zip lock bags to tightly pack our dry clothes in, inside our day packs. Easy! Yes, the weather can change so quickly! One year, when we got to Cliff Tops, it looked like it was going to be a beautiful sunset, then suddenly, within minutes, a big solid BLACK cloud rolled in from the south like a curtain, totally obscuring the view, & big fat rain drops began to fall, just that quickly. But no problem- it was still an amazing experience!

The hike I did this past Sunday/Monday provided one of the best hiking weather I have ever had on the mountain. Beautiful sun, blue skies, 75-80, no humidity going up. Little fog starting the trip down but quickly reverted to the sun, blue sky, puffy clouds, etc. Bad enough on the knees but wonderful on the mind. But, yes, I've hiked it when it was cold, foggy, and rainy with my clothes packed in a plastic bag inside my backpack and a plastic bag on the outside. And, yes Karen, I agree..it was still an amazing experience.
