Beautiful Ending to a Cloudy Day

4/19/2014

What a nice surprise. The guests were treated to a glowing sunset at the last moment. We were cloud covered all day and, just in time for sunset, we witnessed a glorious display of pinks and reds. It was a fairly warm day. The high was 55º with a low of 30º. From what I hear, the trails are fine. They may be a bit muddy since we are currently getting rain.

We had a guest tell us they saw a cub on Trillium. They were not sure where the mother was. Just be careful if you are hiking up that trail. Make a lot of noise and be aware of your surroundings. We have not had a issues with bears in camp.

If you are hiking up today, we will have the heaters on and plenty of hot cocoa on the stove. Hope to see you on the top. Happy Hiking

My mother and I visit Le Conte Lodge vicariously through the Daily Blog each day. We are amazed by how everyone that writes for the blog can paint such vivid word pictures. Even though our first trip up the mountain will be this June with my teenage daughters, we will not cross out “Stay at Le Conte Lodge” off our bucket list. We already know that one trip will never be enough. Looking forward to enjoying the view from your back porch.

I saw a bear cub a couple of years ago while hiking the Husky Gap trail – never saw the momma, which was a good thing. Yes, you always have to aware of what's around you when you hike in an area that's home to critters capable of disemboweling you with one well-executed slash.

I've often thought marketing a trekking pole with a built in tazer for protection against bears might be a good seller. It could also be very effective at removing slower hikers out of your path.

Just enjoyed two good cool nights at Elkmont and was reluctant to leave. Intended to come up Trillium and back one day, but got involved with a longer-than-planned day hike behind the campground.

Just a bit of trivia, perhaps not interesting to many, but as I passed by Sevierville on my way to the park Wednesday morning, at nearly noon, and I got my first view of Leconte, I noticed that with the sun at the right angle I was seeing some white shapes where I thought the lodge was located. I pulled off into some parking lot and used my binoculars to confirm what I had hoped for and that was that I was looking at the buildings up at the lodge ! The mountain still had a light covering of snow and the rays of the sun were reflecting off the roofs of the lodge buildings just at the right angle allowing me to see them. When I stopped at the Chick Fil A next to the Sevierville Walmart I pleasantly discovered that I could actually see the lodge with my naked eyes ! This was a treat for me if no one else. After looking for the lodge from the "Pigeon Forge strip" for ten years I had finally spotted the lodge and confirmed exactly where it was situated up there on the mountain. I might not see it again for a long time to come, but I'll know with certainty where it is. G'day all.

That is so cool! I've often looked at the mountain and wondered exactly where the Lodge is...would have loved to seen what you saw. Did you take any pictures?

Kent~ I would probably buy your trek pole! (for bears only! smile)
Doug~ You were in MY neck of the woods, on clear days I can just make out the lodge if I squint really hard, from my back porch. Now I have YET to find my HOUSE from the lodge. But I do try monthly! smile.
I am glad you guys up top are having a great run of visitors and day hikers....keep up the great job. I hope to come back up in a few weeks. Happy Holidays!

Elisabeth, perhaps I'll build a prototype of my design and send the finished product to you for a little in the field market research. If enough hikers express interest, I'll go ahead with production. :)

We were shelter people this trip; father, mother, 3 sons and daughter all enjoying the beauty of Mt. LeConte. We hiked on up on the 18th; traveling up the Boulevard leaving the 19th down Alum Cave.
We enjoyed visiting the Lodge on Saturday & having a great cup of hot cocoa after the morning rain and purchased some cool flannel PJs & a t-shirt. The sunset as your pictured above in it’s beautiful oranges, blues and violets was enjoyed through our eyes also. Hiking down Alum; we observed the UT swimming & diving team working out by running up the trail and yes they beat us down also. I hate to mention that our children beat us down by an hour. It was great seeing a number of elementary age kiddos on the trail, some leading their pack. The only critters we were privileged to see were a chipmunk and squirrels. Thanks for keeping the lodge going and hope to be staying with you in the near future!
