Beautiful Fall Weekend Ahead

10/7/2011

We have seen a huge difference in weather in one week. Chris and I were laughing as we set out for our daily run in shorts and a t-shirt. Just Saturday we were wearing our running tights, windproof jackets, gloves, and hats. It is not time to send the summer clothes off the mountain just yet. This weekend is looking like one for the books. The high yesterday was 64 with a low of 40.

What is your normal running route up there?

Hi Devin,
We are training for another marathon in Feb. We have a half mile section we do up top. You will see us running the same stretch over and over and over again. I like to call it my mountain treadmill.

Allyson, I am hiking the to the lodge for the first time in the morning. Based on current temperatures how many layers would you recommend I wear? I am generally a cold blooded person. I think it will be in the 40's at sunrise when I hit the trail but them will be in the 60's at the top. Then we are hiking back down the same day. My thoughts were a wicking tee shirt, followed by a wicking long sleeve tee with a northface fleece? Pants are nylon moisture resistant hiking pants that are a little on the thin side. I was thinking my leg muscles will generate their own heat so was not planning to wear a base layer. What do you think? I am nervous (and excited) and want to be well prepared but not overloaded!

Allyson,
I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoy your blog. I've been up and spent the night a total of 14 times and absolutely love it. Your blog makes me feel as if I'm on the mountain again. I would love to hike up sometime with snow on the ground, but for now your beautiful pictures will have to suffice. Thanks so much!

I love the pic!! We hiked up that way this summer and I don't remember the eroded part on the trail. At least that is how it looks in the pic. Will they (rangers) be able to fix it or am I seeing something different and the trail isn't eroded? My students loved seeing the pic and the fact their teacher had hiked it made it more special! Thanks for sharing.

Allyson,
I'm training for my first marathon in November. Got my 18 mile long run to do tomorrow. Running is tough in these North Ga. mountains, I can't imagine running up there. Been training since July, so I know what dedication it takes to just get to the starting line. Good luck!

Allyson, I think I would go crazy running the same 1/2 mile over and over! Back in March we were passed by a couple that was running Alum Cave and I thought they were crazy! With how uneven the ground is along most of that trail I can't imagine how many times they might step wrong and sprain their ankle!

@Pam. The Trail looks ok to me in that pic! It's at a higher elevation with a pretty steep dropoff.

Hi Allyson: Your latest photo of the Alum Cave trail is one I'll make my desktop background for a long time; it's probably one of my favorites now as I know this spot on the trail very well, it being one of the most scenic along that route; I lament the fact that I've not been able to visit the lodge much this year, but the next two years will be different I'm sure. Working there would be a dream, but I find it difficult to get to that possibility; I agree with the folks who consider autuum the best time of year for hiking up the mountain; it is quite beautiful now; cheers.

That cable is very much appreciated in the winter with the snow cover. I have used it many times. The trail looks fine to me.
