Big Storms All Around

7/28/2014

Picture
It was a beautiful day until around 4 p.m.. The clouds started rolling in and the wind picked up. We could see the storms passing to the north of us and wondered if it was going to miss us. About 8 p.m. we sat on the back deck and watched a mean looking cloud as it engulfed the mountain. It didn't take long for the bottom to drop out. We got pounded. The rain gauge measured 3.11" this morning. When we crawled in bed at 9:30, our room looked like we had  plugged in a strobe light. The lightening was putting on an impressive display. It continued to rain off and on all night long. We are currently under a thick cloud cover as I type. If you are coming up today, I would highly recommend not using Rainbow Falls trail. There are still some issues with one of the creek crossings becoming impassable after heavy rains. I want to add that our thoughts and prayers are with the surrounding communities. We hope everyone is safe this morning.

Which crossing? Is it the one above the falls? Any chance someone could dash down there and get a picture? This seems to be a new issue since July 4 '13. What has changed? Did something shift? Lots of questions, I know, but like most folks here, I just can't get enough of my favorite place!

Tomk in SC, It is the one above the falls. Sorry, I just don't have the man power to send someone down the trail to get a picture. I know guests have sent pics to the Park Service and they are aware of the issue. Streams change all of the time. If enough water comes down the mountain, it can cause soil and rocks to shift. I believe that is what has happened in this area. I apologize for not have anymore answers. I just go by the information I have and I know when it rains heavily, it causes that one area to become impassible.

Thought about all of you up there as I watched your "light show" from down below. It was a scary night!

Any word on the gentleman that fell off Alum yesterday and was brought down this morning? That had to be a horrible night!

Lori,
From what we understand, due to the sever weather warnings, they ditched the evacuation plan and stayed on the trail over night. They had a fresh team start out this morning and are currently carrying him down. I don't have any more details to pass on.
