Bringing A Little Cheer To This Rainy Day

10/18/2012

Picture
Oooeee..... It is a wet and blustery morning on the mountain. The rain has moved in. I thought I would share a photo I took from Rocky Spur a couple of days ago and bring some cheer to this dismal morning. Yesterday was a repeat of the day before. Bright blue skies were a gorgous backdrop for the fall colors. The high yesterday was 53 with a low of 35. I am glad it didn't get as cold as the previous nights or we would have awoken to a winter wonderland. Now, time to take the laundry off the line before it ends up in Pittman Center.

That is a wonderful view looking down; looks sort of like a giant Persian rug or large carpet ! I know this spot. The colors here in central KY have peaked and will soon all be gone. The orange-yellow leaves around my house are about as bright as I've ever seen them. I think I'll drive down to the Park this afternoon and spend some time photographing a few scenes. Might be a great time to bicycle the loop out at Cades Cove Saturday morning. G'day.

Yesterday we hiked from the Clingman's Dome road to the Elkmont Camp parking area. The hike transversed Sugarland Mountain, Rough Creek and the Little River trails. The array of colors were apparent as we descended through the various elevations and types of trees.

We were caught in the Newfound Gap traffic when retrieving our car on the Clingman's Dome road.

This morning before dawn, we drove the Roaring Creek area and the road was covered with leaves and tree branches. We did not realize the intensity of the wind until starting the drive.

We saw a mother bear and cub at the junction of the Little River and Goshen Prong trails. Each of us seemed content to maintain a safe distance and we left the area immediatey.

You mustv'e got the leftover storms from the west side of Tennessee? I heard there were tornado warnings in Memphis.
The leaves are all in color here in Michigan and I just noticed today that some are turning brown (boo hiss), and now all are starting to fall. Just wish our rain would give us a break so we could get out and enjoy a little more.

H Clark: That's a nice route you spoke of. I have gone west on the A.T. a short distance, then off the mountain, staying a night in a backcountry campsite before going on down to Elkmont, or a time or two going on over to Huskey Gap and down to Hwy 441. Any way you go from the Clingman's Dome road towards the Elkmont area results in a great hike. There's still two or three variations I want to try there, too. Leaves are falling rapidly here iin C. KY. Peak is past. G'day

Hiked up to the top before dawn hoping to catch the sunrise on Thursday, instead it was cloudy and I couldn't see anything! If the weather looks nice Sunday I will be giving it another go on my return through the park!
