The snow seems to have tapered off. We awoke to 8.5" of snow this morning. It was so peaceful around camp. The low last night was 15. Guests stayed in bed under their warm blankets until we rang the breakfast bell. It is currently 16 degrees at 8:30 this morning. Today is going to be a great day for a good book in front of the heater. The high yesterday never rose above 22.

How are the trails leading up to the lodge, especially Alum Cave? I am planning to bring a group on a day hike on Sunday.

My 11-year old son has now decided he wants to be a Mt. LeConte caretaker when he grows up!

Thanks for inspiring some career aspirations! Stay warm...

Our group of five hiked down a snow covered Alum yesterday. We enjoyed the serenity of LeConte and appreciate the cheerful and attentive staff. Making the first tracks down while not meeting a single hiker was like walking through a Christmas card. The snow covered canopy over the rhododendrons was especially beautiful. Roads were closed when we reached the trailhead and our adventure was not complete. We gave a stranded hiker a ride to Newfound Gap as we retrieved the second vehicle. The car was overloaded so two of us elected to walk down the highway towards Gatlinburg until the car picked us up. It was especially peaceful walking down the snow covered road, without tracks, and observing wildlife far more abundant than along the trails. Another unique experience capped our LeConte journey. Suggestion to fellow hikers: If you're planning a trip up, and HWY 431 is closed, then try Trillium as a backup. Also, those bottom bunks are pretty chilly right now and the top bunks get hot.

Amazing photos. It's hard to believe how quickly the weather can change on the mountain. Both grown sons and I were up there on Monday and Tuesday - hiked down Alum Cave Trail to blue sky and temps in the 50s and 60s. As always, we throughly enjoyed our trip to LeConte Lodge - thanks to everyone for your warm hospitality.

These pictures are spectacular! I was there on October 22nd and meant to tell you how very much I enjoy your blog and the photos. I would have been another one staying under the warm blankets this morning too!

We also had the honor of enjoying LeConte in the snow this year but our experience was in the spring. We had hiked up Alum and came back the Boulevard breaking trail along the way. As it was said, it was like being a part of a Christmas card. An experience that I'll treasure for the rest of my life.

Any advice? coming up on monday I hope. Do you think they will have the road open to reach alum cave trail head? I know access to some of the other trails are closed for the season. Usually come in October but this was only reservation I could get this year. have been up every year for 12 overnight visits since 2000 and seen maybe an inch of snow or it melted off after it fell but nothing like 9 inches! Want to be prepared as much as possible. I know you guys are in heaven on earth up there right now, enjoy the snow! Snuggle!
