Bye, Bye Coneflowers

8/26/2011

Fall is in the air. The coneflowers are on their way out. The nights are nice and cool. The days have been beautiful in the high 60's to low 70's. People have been asking what is in store for us with the hurricane. From what I can tell, we are not going to get any of the aftermath. But, who knows. Our philosophy on the mountain is "We get what we get".

What a great picture, stark but yet colorful. Looks like a sea of blue behind the flowers and dead tree. I'll appreciate the lower temps when I come up in a couple weeks..I'm not a hot, hot weather person. Hope you don't get any damage on the mountain..I remember the year after Andrew I think it was there were landslides and trails that had to be cleaned up and you could see the damage as you hiked up Alum. Looking forward to meeting you in person in a couple weeks and the yummy hot choc.

Planning a day hike on Sunday Sept.4, up Trillium Gap Trail to the lodge and down Alum Cave Trail weather permitting. Using a shuttle from Alum to Grotto Falls parking lot. Pickup is at 8 A.M. at Alum. There is room for 3 more people in the shuttle. If anybody is interested we will split the cost of the shuttle, total cost $52 (cash). Your half would be $26. If interested email me at: helton30534@netscape.net

I have noticed the last several years we have visited Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area, there are so many dead trees. (like in your picture) I've never seen it this bad. Does anyone know why?

Allyson,
When we were up there in May, the Trillium Gap trail was closed until about 10am each morning for a few days. We were wondering what, if any, other trail the llamas would use if they couldn't use Trillium. My husband and his brother are coming back up at the end of October, taking Trillium up & Bullhead down (they will have been on all 5 trails then). Love the pictures.

That my friend would be mostly from the Wooly Adelgid...a invasive old cuss ! Has been working on our Hemlocks for several yrs. now. There has been a ongoing treatment for the more excessible and older stands of Hemlocks for some time now with some good results. Check out the parks home page for more info....
