Cold Temperatures Moving In

I wished I had not sent all of my summer clothes off the mountain. Yesterday was a perfect day for soaking in some vitamin D. The high was a toasty 60º and the low dropped down to 37º. Just goes to show the extreme temperatures we see on the mountain. Talking about extreme temperatures, I don't think those summer clothes would come in handy over the next few days. The forecast is looking frigid. We might see some more snow before the weekend is over. We are seeing a lot of snow melt, so the ground is pretty saturated. This means, when the temperatures drop, we are going to see ice on the trails. If you are scheduled to hike up during this arctic blast, you might want to invest in some ice traction for your boots. Yaktrax, Micro spikes, and Stabilicers are a few of the brands you will find. They are great for walking on packed snow and ice. If you are day hiking, please make sure you have plenty of time for your hike down the mountain. The temperatures will not be very forgiving. We will keep you updated on trail conditions and any news we have on our end. Please be safe and happy hiking.

Allyson, I know you have talked about this but I must have missed the posts....what will you and Chris be doing once you leave the mountain in a couple of weeks? Whatever it is, I am sure you are looking forward to a new chapter in life. I will certainly miss your posts, photos and the words you use to describe the mountain top. Thank you! It looks as if JP will be in for an interesting winter!

We are 4 of those hiking up this weekend. Planning on starting at daybreak so we don't have to rush. We definitely will be keeping a close eye out for all of your postings/weather until then. We are hoping to do Alum since we are bringing some 1st timers with us. Thanks :)

The transition from fall to winter at the lodge is always an interesting time to me. I have stayed there during these final two weeks of the season and have always been rewarded with a magical and pleasant experience. I would be amiss if I did not express my appreciation to the crew for the great job that they do and I wish those who aren't returning next year much happiness and success in their endeavors. G'day

Jane and I were up there Monday night and caught the perfect weather. The Alum Cave trail was no problem...just a few short patches of light ice. I never used the microspikes I had with me at all. It was a crystal clear time on Monday and then hiking back down yesterday! As always, we had a great time. Thanks to all the crew for making it another wonderful adventure.

Our work in Roaring Fork in progressing. Please remember that there is no access to Roaring Fork even by foot due to the bridge construction project.
