Come out, come out, where ever you are (sunshine)

The sun is playing peek-a-boo between the clouds. This has made for a chilly spring morning. Chris and I are trying to will the sun to come out for our hike down the mountain today. We are heading down for some time in the low lands. We have a list a mile long of yard projects that need to be taken care of. I am not sure how much rest and relaxtion we are going to get. Once again you will be entertained by the great story teller we call Nathan. He certainly keeps us in stiches. He has also been known to do a mean Neil Diamond impersonation. I hope you all enjoy your stories and I will be back in a week.

Allyson, A group from the Chattanooga Hiking Club came up last Wed to celebrate the 80th birthday of Ray Myers. I, Wayane Chambers, signed the consent letter, but didn't know if you got Ray's name for the picture and the Blog. Just for your information.

If you go to the top of the page and look at the tabs, you will see a tab for "guest sightings". Just click on that.

I need some help, going to drive up and do a day hike. Bringing my youngest son with us. How long will it take to come in boulevard and down alum? Boulevard is only trail my oldest hasn't been on. The youngest made it down rainbow in april in about 3hrs. just wondering if we have time to make the hike.

Down Rainbow in three hours is a good clip. Doing Boulevard up and Alum down in a day is a tall order for a little tyke. How young?
Let's say Alum down after Boulevard up will be three hours. Let's assume that you want to be at the ACB trailhead by 7PM to allow for something going wrong. That means you have to leave the top by 4PM. Figure 90 minutes at the top, half of that at Myrtle Point means you get to Myrtle Point by 2:30. Boulevard can be done in five hours if you stay with it. That means you have to be hiking by 9:30AM If you are smart, you will take the side trip to the Jump Off and have lunch there. A leisurely break there, all in from Boulevard to Jumpoff and back to Boulevard is an hour and a half. Can you be hiking by 8AM and ensure you all eat and drink a bunch of water and Gatorade? Start hiking at Newfound Gap after 8AM and you have to start dumping options. Start hiking after 11AM and you are spending away recovery options and risk descending in the dark.
If you have never done the Jump Off, and the weather is nice, it is a must do side trip. Same with Myrtle Point. Have a great hike!

one mistake, we came down trillium in 3hrs. as far as start time, we will be on the boulevard shortly after sunup. he is 10 but showed great strength as he carried his own pack up rainbow and down trillium( in a downpuor none the less). he should have no problem then i believe. thanks for the info. boulevard, here we come.

Sound advice from TomK. I couldn't tell from your question if you've done Boulevard before. If you haven't, it is good to know that you will be climbing more than the difference between NGap and LeConte. In the Mt. Kephart area near the AT/Boulevard junction (6,014) and the Jumpoff you are in the 6000 - 6200 range. Not long after you continue in the direction of LeConte after the Jumpoff side trail (6,058), there is a descent of several hundred feet before you level back out. I agree that the Jumpoff is a must if you aren't socked in with clouds/fog. The side trail goes steeply up hill but just for a few minutes. You level out in an open grassy patch at the peak of Kephart at 6,217. The trail goes briefly steeply down hill and then its a mostly level walk to the Jumpoff (6,133). You'll know you are there when the trail dies. There is a 1,000 ft cliff. Looking out and slightly down at about 1 or 2 o'clock you can see the people at Charlies Bunion. It should take 15 minutes or less to reach the Jumpoff on the side trail. Wishing you good weather and a great hike!
