Come Out, Come Out, Where Ever You Are (Sunshine)

8/8/2013

Picture
It is a guessing game as to the weather for today. We awoke to heavy cloud coverage and it is now sunny with bits of blue sky peeking through. Hopefully the good weather will stay with us while Chris and I hike down tonight. We will be gone for a couple of days. Time to take a breather and recharge so I can come back and finish up the busy summer. Yesterday was a bit wet with .35" falling on the mountain. The high was 65º with a low of 52º. If this weather pattern continues over the next couple of months, I hate to think what kind of snow fall we could get. I hope everyone has a great weekend. Chris and I will be running a Color Me Rad race in Knoxville. We will be back on Sunday. Enjoy Nathan's stories and happy hiking.

Have a great time off the mountain. I had some girls I know run a color race last weekend in Grand Rapids, MI. I had to laugh, I didn't even know what it was until they posted pictures. Oh boy were they colorful when they were done. Sounds like a great time. Have fun!!

Yesterday in Cosby (near Jellystone Resort), we had 1.45 inches of rain in 30 minutes, bringing our official annual total here, as of August 7th, equal to what we got in all of 2012!! It has been an amazingly wet year, and you are right, if it continues on into winter, we could get some unbelievable snow. My snow shoes are ready!!

Rain, more rain.........light drizzly rain today here......I like it, but I could use some sunlight myself. Last evening I went to speak at a meeting of a couple of Boy Scout Troops and to my surprise there were some Girl Scouts present as well. Now, that was just fine with me, but it sure made me realize, again, my age. When I was a scout there was no way we'd let girls into our midst - - didn't have a thing against them, just that they had their own ways of doing things, etc. A sign of changing culture I suppose. I talked to them mainly about hiking and camping, although they seemd to already have some pretty good ideas about tent camping and related activites. I was stumped when a couple of questions were asked of me regardng the latest equipment and such. I'm essentially rather thoroughly old fashioned but have made an attempt to equip myself with a modest quantity of some of the latest gear, which is nice, but a lot of my gear is nonetheless fairly "ancient" and very much still usuable. I think I was able to at least add a few ideas to their contemporary knowledge but when one of the boys whipped out his Ipad to show me a website he'd found which described some of the latest gear I was lost !! Well, that's the future I guess. I spent several minutes telling them about Leconte Lodge but after I described the lack of water and electricity up on the mountain and having to hike at least 5.5 mi to get there I believe about half or more of them began to lose interest; another sign of the times. Yet some of them I believe will check out the lodge on the internet, and perhaps one or two will be brave enough to post a comment here. The main idea(s) I tried to convey to them were that each hiker / camper ought to have a style which is the reflection of himself, his build, his mind (We create success or failure on the trail primarily by our thoughts. i.e., use your brain, not your endurance; know your strengths and take advantage of them), his age, and his previous habits. For me, the simpler I keep things, the better off I am out on the trails. G'day

Job well done, I'm sure, Doug Y. I hope those scouts appreciated you sharing your thoughts and experiences. I was a scout (girl) for all my school days (though it wasnt the popular thing to do). And it was that group that gave me an appreciation and love of our natural world. Hiking and camping is what kept me a scout those many years and our troop was active in this. I remember how I hated returning to the "real" world after spending a weekend out with nature. So maybe you've sparked an interest in these young men to turn off their Ipads and cell phones and venture into the wild. I am so thankful to be speending these retirement years in WNC. Lots of trails to travel here and in Eastern Tennesse.

Thanks; I do believe that I was able to 'communicate' effectively with a few of those young girls and boys. One scout leader asked me to consider accompanying them on a short one-night camping trip this fall which I'll gladly do. Scouting was a valuable part of my growing up in eastern KY and the principles I acquired remain with me today. I believe I'm very much like you in that when I return to "civilization" I'm usually disappointed and saddened by having to resume my 'activities' in the 'real' world. Is it really the "real" world !? I do find that helpng and sharing my experiences and knowledge with others is probably the best thing I can do with my life, but it's becoming more and more difficult with the advancement of all the "gadgets" available that take so much away from truly good aspects of life. Give me the trails and secluded places deep within the woods anytime ! G'day.

Howard,

I don't want to jinx us, but it's been a good season for bears on the mountain. We have seen bears a few times around camp, but more often seen sign on the trails that they have passed that way earlier. More importantly, the bears have been "wild," and not hanging around waiting for people to give them food handout--the best situation for successful human/bear coexistence. We'll be glad to have you come see us.

Nathan.

no panhandling bears just waiting around looking for handouts from people.

Enjoy your time off the mountain! My daughter-n-law (to be) and I did a Glow in the Park run recently in Birmingham. They threw (and sprayed wet) glow in the dark paint on you and had black lights to run through...it was a lot of fun!!
see you in September!!!

Was the tagline chosen because the world is down to just two surviving Munchkins as of 8 AUG 13?

I saw that news report regarding the last surviving "Munchkins". However, I think there's an entire family of them living back in eastern KY where I grew up !!!.............................Perseid meteor shower (peak days a tleast) is supposed to commence tomorrow - - sure would like to spend a few nights up at the lodge observing, etc. G'day
