Cool Stats

1/6/2011

Hey folks, Allyson here. I ran into Jim Renfro, the Air Quality Specialist for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and he told me he had some cool data he thought you might enjoy. Jim keeps up with all kinds of weather data for the park. He sent this to me and I thought I would pass it along.

"Snowfall for this past December measured 53 inches (looks like a record). So, the 2009-2010 (Dec, 2009 - Mar, 2010) snowfall was a record (138.5"- over double the average); Feb,2010 was a record (52"); and Dec, 2010 was a record (53"-only 34" last December, 2009). So, off to a snowy start this winter." - Jim Renfro

t is my understaanding that LeConte is closed for the winter. Why does eyeryone that thinks that they know how to camp in bad weather thinks that they can just go up the mountain and expect everyone to fall over themselves to take care of them. How stupid can people get. Take of yourselves and stay off of the mountain when it is freezing.

Thanks Allyson. I love the photos and info. I love to day dream. If only I could walk up the mountain. I love these TNN hills in all weather. :)

Awesome stuff. Apparently global warming means more snow? January looks like its shaping up for some big time snow as well. Stay warm and keep the pictures coming!

As for the mountain being closed in the winter, its my understanding that the lodge is closed, (we have the winter caretaker writing this blog) And as long as the roads through the Park are open trails are open.

The smokies are not normally a place where folks venture out in the snow but the majority of the USA as well as the rest of the world prepare for winter conditions whenever they hike regardless of the season. Education goes a long way towards everyone having a good time out in the mountains. Layers, water, water, no cotton. Have fun!

Thanks Allyson,
With that amount of snowfall Alex is probably wondering if he is back in Denali.

Thanks for the stats.

Enjoy your flatland winter.
