Cooler Nights

8/4/2011

Another full day of sunshine. It was great. The clouds rolled in after sunset and brought a good rain storm. Sleeping to the sound of rain on your roof is so relaxing.
The day hikers are starting to thin out again. I know a few schools in the area have started back. The mountain air is starting to get cooler at night. It is time to pull out the fleece for the evenings. If you are staying over night in the near future, make sure you bring some clothes for cooler weather.

Hiked the AT and other trails on Monday. Passed the Alum Cave parking lot on the way to Newfound Gap and it was full including additional cars parked on the road side.

Not sure how many hiked to the the cave verses the lodge, but Monday could have been a busy day in your area.

Can't wait for the cooler weather, being from Florida I especially love hiking the mountain when there's snow. I'm staying in the LeConte shelter on 8-17. I was wondering if anyone has any info on whether I need to prepare for Mosquitoes or horseflys. I've not been up in the summer. I have to remember to order a lunch from the lodge.

Curious -- is Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge less busy than ususal? When I check out the Webcams, it seems like not a lot of traffic - particularly leading up to the weekends.

I've found that most people travel to the Smokies right after kids get out of school the middle of June and then in July. However, imagine it will be busy close and over the Labor Day weekend. Also KNOW it will probably be busy the weekend of 9/9 as they have a hot rod car show in Pigeon Forge then and it is really bad traffic especially getting from Sevierville to G-burg. Glad I found the local route around G-burg and in the back way through the Arts/Craft area as that is when I have my standing LeConte reservations. Only about a month to go!!

Can anyone answer a question my husband and I have been debating all summer...how many trails in the national park lead to Leconte Lodge?

Renee, five trails end at the lodge, actually a couple of these five join other trails at the top, and there are more that start at different places and funnel into these five that end at the lodge. Hope this help. Hiking Trails in the Smokies is a good book to get this info!
