Cotton Candy Clouds

9/17/2014

Picture
After being in the clouds all day yesterday, it was a treat to watch the sun rise this morning with a nice pillow of clouds covering the valley below. I will say that cloud inversions are one of my favorite images to witness on the mountain. It makes me want to take a stroll across the cotton like ocean. Better yet, a nap would be marvelous. No time for naps today. It is going to be a busy day up top for the crew.

Our fellow employee, Ruthie, lost her grandmother on Saturday. She hiked down to spend time with her family during this time of mourning. Her grandmother had a wonderful 99 1/2 years surrounded by loved ones. We send our sympathy and prayers  to Ruthie's family.

Time to get the table set for breakfast. It is a chilly morning. The high yesterday was 57º with a low of 44º. If you are hiking up to spend the night, don't forget your layers. You will want them for the evenings.

There's something about cloud inversions that can suddenly remove you from the reality that you're standing on a mountain and evoke some wonderful illusions. I remember one particular shot taken by JP last winter that looked like it could have been taken on some island in the South Pacific. I got lost in that one for several minutes.

My condolences go out to Ruthie and her family.

On Tuesday of last week we hike up rainbow falls trail to the lodge. Took our time and landed there after 8 1/2 hrs. It was a great stay at lodge everyone one was great. Thanks to all the crew that made it super. My wife had never hike before it was ruff on her but she did it just for me. Headed down Wednesday after a fantastic breakfast and took our time, went down bullhead trail and landed back at our car in 8 hrs. It was great time looking at the beauty of the great Smoky mountains. Thanks to all who gave us advice about hiking. It really help us. The Dills

What is the best month to see a cloud inversion,
Or what conditions cause it?
Thanks

My thoughts and prayers are with Ruthie and her family at this time of loss of her Grandmother. My friend Bonnie and I had the pleasure of meeting Ruthie, her Dad and friends at the Alum Cave Trailhead on Tuesday 9/10/14; and talking with Ruthie again after dinner.

Lots of love and prayers to Ruthie and family. It is a sad time and it is also a time of celebration of the life of a beloved lady. You will always carry the memory of your grandmother in your heart.
