Crossbill Finch

10/8/2011

Picture
Chris captured this photo of a Crossbill Finch. These birds are pretty rare to find in the Smokies. We are fortunate to see a dozen or more almost every day. If you keep a bird list and wish to cross them off, Mt. LeConte would be the place to do that.
Today is looking like a beautiful day for a hike. I suspect we will be pretty busy with the long weekend. I hope everyone enjoys their time outdoors. Come see us up top.

Going back for a minute to running an marathon: It's about 16 feet from my recliner to the refrigerator. That means I would have to make 8,580 trips to equal 26 miles. I don't think that I can drink that much beer in one day but I'm willing to try.;-) Wish I was up top on these beautiful days; I'm very envious and hope to make it again next year.

Hi Allyson, is the treated water tap by the office going to be working over the winter? I'm going to be in the shelter over the Thanksgiving holiday. I was just up for lunch last month and it is always surreal to see you in the kitchen live after following the blog daily from Florida. Your chicken salad is excellent by the way.

Can't wait. Myself, my oldest son and my father-n-law are hiking up sunday to stay in the shelter. Thinking about up rainbow and down bullhead. Any ideas to what the temps might be sunday night?

the water tap will not be on during the winter months. The spring is your source for water during that time. It is a short distance down Trillium. Glad you enjoyed the chicken salad.

Brian, the temps are usually a good 20 degrees cooler then what they are in the low lands. You can kind of guestamate on what the predictions are for Knoxville and drop it 20 degrees.

Passed the Alum Cave parking area today. Never seen so many cars & vans there. Hope not everyone went all the way to the top... there would not have been standing room left in the lodge yard! Ha!
Yes, great weather today... perfect for a fall hike!

Twelve of us hiked the Alum Cave Bluff Trail on Saturday to LeConte Lodge. The weather & the trail were beautiful! Stayed over night at the lodge in the condo. The staff & the food were excellent! Really enjoyed it & look forward to next year!

My son Nathan and I hiked up on saturday for his first time to the lodge for a day hike. Really beautiful scenery and perfect weather for a hike. I was proud of how well my son did for his first 10 mile hike I guess his soccer season has kept him in shape. As for me I barley made it and this was my third trip to the top.Very sore now but worth the trip.
