Meanwhile, hold fast to this thought, and grip it close: yield not to adversity; trust not to prosperity; keep before your eyes the full scope of Fortune’s power, as if she would surely do whatever is in her power to do. That which has been long expected comes more gently. Seneca
Morning,

It was a beautiful, clear night. It only got down to 14. The high yesterday was 34. It felt much warmer with the sun reflecting off the snow. It was 16 and clear at observation. It looks like we'll have a stunning weekend.

I was able to get a bunch of chores done yesterday. I like to have the place in order before the weekends, when I enjoy being out and about talking to the dayhikers. Special thanks to two folks; Chris for packing me up some goodies and ATC volunteer trail maintainer Michael for all his hard work and an informative book about bears.

There will be a lunar eclipse tomorrow morning. It should be pretty exciting.

I'm headed down Rainbow Falls this morning to meet some friends. I'll be back around 3pm. Happy hiking!

Nice pic JP. Boy, I'm the first to comment today, I'm usually the last. Not that its a race. Dollar a day will get u there slowly but surely, just keep plugging along. Seems so weird to see snow in Tennessee when we don't have any in Michigan, YET. But we will. Have a great day hiking, Enjoy!!

Donna and I enjoyed our short visit yesterday as well as the hike up alum. It was a beautiful day to be on the trail.

Lots of ice above alum cave but the amazing slip on shoe spikes remove the slick stuff from the equation completely leaving only ones conditioning to slow you down. Really sore today but was well worth it. Lots of falling ice falling from top alum cave also early as the sun began melting the cold nights work.

Have a great weekend and thanks again for keeping up this blog. Sorry but didn't know to bring the cinnamon oatmeal....but will for next time. Take care and stay warm/dry.

Wouldn't it be exciting if Bobkitty did turn out to be a cougar! If I was a cougar, I'd live on Mt LeConte... Of course Frank says I AM a cougar because I always flirt with our lawn boy in Coral Gables. LOL! Oh dear... Anyway, here's link you may find interesting.

I've missed chatting with everyone. We've had a very busy summer, including my first hike to Mt LeConte.

Congratulations Juanita on making the hike. I remember you posting last winter and asking questions about the hike. I am glad you were able to do it. It will be the first of many.

Thanks, JP. I read the posts every day.
And welcome back, Juanita, I wondered where you'd gone! Congratulations on making it to the top. Can't wait for our trip in March.

Great posts and photos (as usual :) ). Thanks for the 'lunar eclipse/NASA' link! Beginning at 6:33 EST and 51 minutes totality..should be awesome if the clouds will stay away. I hope your day is nothing less than amazing! C ya'

Just wondering if the office is open to day-hikers to warm up & eat a snack before heading back down?

I enjoy reading your daily posts. I used to visit LeConte often. Haven't hiked up in years. Need to get back in "hiking shape" and make that visit again. Thanks, JR for all the info. What's your lastest read?

AL,

The office isn't open in the winter. The times my wife Carolyn and I have come up during the winter we have huddled on a porch and eaten as quickly as possible. I do believe, though, that the fancy outhouses are available for use.

I love this blog! I also love books about bears and other wildlife. I'm wondering what is the name of your new book.

Thanks for the daily post. I enjoy keeping up with what's going on up high. I would like to see more pics of the trails if possible during your hikes. We are coming up for the week after Christmas and one day would love to make my first hike to Mt. LeConte. Have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS. Jeff.

Bryant,
Yesterday there was about 6" around the cabins from what we saw and I see they are reporting 5" today. Check out the daily weather data for there and other parts of the park at: http://www.srh.noaa.gov/productview.php?pil=MRXRTPMRX&versions=8

Marty & Barbara,
It's called 'FAQ's about Smoky Mountain Black Bears'. Very good info for anyone visiting the park.
