Dandelions Popping Up

10/25/2012

Picture
Once again, another amazing day up top. The high yesterday was 62 with a low of 42. I am seeing dandelions pop up around camp. Poor little guys don't realize they could be covered in snow in a matter of a day. This time of year, the weather could change on a dime. It does not take much fluctuation for us to have a warm day and snow the next. I may be reporting about the warm temperatures we are having, but make sure you come prepared.

Dandelions on the mountain, eh !? Perhaps you could harvest them and prepare some dandelion wine ! I'd tell you how, but I don't know how. I worry about those people who are out hiking this time of year and who are not well prepared for those sudden weather changes as you mention. It might be an extra burden to carry along proper gear hiking in this wonderful weather, but it's best to do so. I got caught once on the Cades Cove loop bicycling when a very sudden snow squall engulfed the area, and I had a pretty difficult time getting back to the campground, A rookie mistake on my part. So up on Leconte one has to be twice as careful obviously. Have a great day up there !

Be up there next week......the packs already have the heavy snow coats in case......yak traks as well.....a staple of any winter packing trip

I bought some yaktrax last fall in anticipation of getting out for wonderful winter hikes. The mild winter left me with only one use in a whopping 1 1/2 inch snow. In hiking up Alum this past August I was wondering how the 'trax would do in the rocky cabled areas. Do you feel these have enough grip or is something more cleated better. I would love to winter hike to the top but some of those cliffs could result in no second opportunity to do so.

My son and I hiked Alum on opening day back in 2010 in 18 inches of packed snow and ice using yaktrax and they worked like a charm. Enjoy your hike!

Hello JP how are you? I bet your excited about getting back on the mountain as well as the crew is getting off for a much needed break. Looking forward to the adventures of JP.
The weather is beautiful here too. I had to put my shorts back on, with it being 71 degrees. No complaints here. But it will be coming soon, because I heard they got 5 inches of snow out in Wyoming. So better enjoy it while we can.
Chris, yax trax make a world of difference. I wear them at home in Michigan winter walking too. As my poor lab is slipping I'm sticking. Yep, in another week we will all be reading on the blog "Should I bring my trax?" Just pack them, better safe than sorry.
Beautiful pic Allyson, enjoy those dandelions.

Meant yax trak

Yax Trax are coils that get strapped to the bottom of your boots. Make sure you get the ones that have an extra strap across the laces on your boot. We lost one in a muddy section of the trail. Sucked it right off the boot unknown to us until later.
I bought mine at a hiking store in Richmond, KY but I would think most outdoor stores would have them. The only hiking store that I know of in Gatlinburg is "The Day Hiker". Maybe someone knows of another.

Jon, Try the Nantahala Outdoor Center store in Gatlinburg. It's at light 10 Just before you go into the park. They have a HUGE selection of hiking gear (and other outdoor-related stuff as well).

As spring, summer, fall & winter metaphorically remind us of our own morbid life cycle, these warm autumn days rejuvinate my ancient spirit & encourage my hope of recapturing some youthful exuberance. Oh the sun! Oh the sun!

It was the face of spring, it was the face of summer, it was the warmness of clover breath. Pomegranate glowed in her lips, and the noon sky in her eyes. To touch her face was that always new experience of opening your window one December morning, early, and putting out your hand to the first white cool powdering of snow that had come, silently, with no announcement, in the night. And all of this, this breath-warmness and plum-tenderness was held forever in one miracle of photographic is chemistry which no clock winds could blow upon to change one hour or one second; this fine first cool white snow would never melt, but live a thousand summers.
