What we lose in our great human exodus from the land is a rooted sense, as deep and intangible as religious faith, of why we need to hold on to the wild and beautiful places that once surrounded us. Barbara Kingsolver

Morning y'all,

It's a warm, rainy morning up top. The high yesterday reached 48 degrees. The overnight low was 36 degrees. It was 36 degrees and raining at 7am observation. The mountain received .87" of rain yesterday and no snow. There is no snow on the ground. The warm rain melted plenty of ice and there is very little left on the trail. The trails are sure to be wet and sloppy. Don't forget your rain gear. Please keep in mind - THE LODGE IS CLOSED FOR THE SEASON. THERE ARE NO ACCOMODATIONS AVAILABLE UP TOP.

And, the road is closed. 441 was closed a bit ago due to a landslide and fallen trees. I would assume this means there is no trail open to get up there now. Have a fun, solitary day. I texted Ruthie and Matthew about the road closure btw.

Love today's quote JP and all that it represents. I haven't read Kingsolver, but might have to now. Thx

After reading the post about Hwy. 441 I went to the NPS road Smokes Road info. The highway is now open after clearing some downed trees. This was posted about a10:20 AM.

It's almost very surprising that people continue to have to be reminded that the Lodge is closed for the season and that there are no accomodations available up there.

The reasons that we need to hold on to the wild and beautiful places around us are many, and it is the next generations into whose hands will fall the responsibility of doing this. It's why I am always happy to see youngsters out hiking and camping; they need to always be encouraged to appreciate and love the outdoors.
