Dust Storm?

10/20/2012

We were so excited to see a beautiful blue sky yesterday morning. As the morning progressed we began to notice a haze taking over our beloved mountain. After being up here for ten years, I can tell you that the weather patterns were not consistant to the having smog in the air. We had also been commenting on how clear it was yesterday morning. I first thought it was a wildfire. It is not uncommon for surrounding counties to have issues with forest fires during this time of year. After wondering about it for a while, it was interesting to discover the cause. Apparently our dear Smoky Mountains were being engulfed by the remnants of a dust storm blowing in from the great plains. Amazing how jet streams work. As of now, we are socked in with clouds. I will be interested to see if the air has cleared once the fog lifts. The high yesterday was 52 with a low of 30. It looks like a great day to play in the Smokies.

Noticed the same thing in North Ga yesterday. Thought it was smoke, but it did seem different. Weird.

Interesting; the only consistent thing about weather pattens is that they are always changing; such is nature.

Have they ever been up? In 204 days, my boys and I are bringing my dad and uncle for their first trip up top. I have been feeding them pics from our past trips up top.

Brian N Bama - this will be their first time. We are anxious to show them LeConte lodge. Will be staying 2 nights so they will have time to look around and be there. When the llamas come up.

I'm 7 years old and made my 4th trip up today. We take Alum Cave Trail up and down but one time we came up Alum and out Boulevard and it was a very long hike to do all in one day and I don't ever want to hike that much in one day again.

Alyssa, we hiked the Boulevard in and down Alum and you are right that is a long hike, but one of my favorites.
