Chris and I still on days off. We have been enjoying the amazing weather and display of color. The leaves are hitting their peak. We are looking forward to our hike up on Tuesday. We should have a stunning day to be on the trail.

What a great picture. I love the fact the shadows from the handrails are perfectly aligned with the floor of the bridge. Adding the sepia tone makes it complete. Compliments on a fabulous shot. Reminds me of Ansel Adams' style of work.
Love the blog. I check it daily to see what's going on. Hope that you all are enjoying the crisp nights.

I agree: a great photo with the shadows aligned across the bridge; the sepia quality is nice as well; whenever I cross this bridge on the way to the lodge I feel that I'm at home and peace again.

Beautiful picture ! I too check the blog daily. My husband and I stayed at the lodge back in September and can not wait to get back up the mountain! We have been hiking here at home in Indiana at our state parks and national forests. I love this time of year! Happy hiking to you and Chris!

Ditto to Doug Y. I've been hiking up to LeConte sine 1997 and have the same at home feeling at the bridge. We last did a day hike in Sept. Your daily updates are part of my day. Thank you for the incredible pics.

Our cabin looks up at Mt. LeConte from Gatlinburg. I now know what I am looking up at. Looking forward to hiking up some day to be able to enjoy the view from the opposite end!

Let me add my name to the list of "great picture" people. I too enjoy the blog and cannot wait each day to see what is new. I've been going to the Smokies since my parents took me in 1952 and have hiked up to LeConte since 1976, most of the years staying in the lodge although I've backpacked and stayed at the shelter a couple times. I look forward every year to my trip to the Smokies in June with my gal friends and then to LeConte in September with whomever I choose to take. I usually take one friend who likes to hike as much as me and she looks forward to being the chosen one. So far I've taken 2 of my sisters and am working on a brother who lives in Co. I keep telling him he needs to see MY mountains..they are just as awesome as HIS mountains (Rockies). Keep the pics coming. I'll miss them this winter season. Any chance whoever is the caretaker for the winter will keep the blog up? Hope so!
Jacque, glad to hear a fellow hoosier is enjoying our Indiana state parks! What day did you stay at the lodge in Sept. I didn't make it this year on the 12th as my daughter and her husband took my 2 spots this year. Just wondered if you were there at the same time.

Marilyn, Hello. We stayed at the lodge on September 21 which was my 40 birthday. It was our first trip up and we fell in love with it! Do you have the same date reserved every year? That would be awesome. Do you hike alot in the state parks? Indiana has some beautiful ones!

For those of you who have asked where this bridge is located, it the last bridge you come to on Alum Cave when heading toward the parking lot. I am so glad you all like it. As for the blog this winter, you will be happy to hear that our winter caretaker will be continuing the blog all winter long.

I am not a hiker, but I especially like this blog because it is about a part of the Smokies that I will probably never experience. I do love to view photos of the Smokies and the photo of the bridge is quite unique. A truly great photograph!

I would buy a print of this picture if it came in poster size and be proud to hang it in my home. I hope you and Chris will be back next season.

Love the picture too! Glad to hear the site will still be going this winter. I too check here first thing every morning to see the new pictures and comments.
JacqueJ--are you going next year for your b-day again? glad you had a great trip in Sept. We are going back next Sept to spend the night!

This Saturday will be my 26th trip up LeConte but my first stay at the lodge. My daughter had been calling everyday in case there was a cancellation this weekend and her persitence paid off for Saturday night. It will be my 62nd birthday and there is no place I would rather spend it.
The lesson is that if you really want to stay at the lodge don't give up.

I am so glad to hear that the blog will continue during the winter months. I can only imagine the beautiful winter pictures we will see! Kathy F. no,we are not staying next year on my birthday. We put in for it but did not get it however we did get a date in August and are just as excited!

Jacque, yes I have the same time every year. I was grandfathered in since I've had this same day since '95. In 2011 it will be Sept 11. Yes, I hike the IN state parks..as matter of fact 3 other gals and myself are going to either tippecanoe or prophetstown on this coming Friday for a couple hours. Hopefully we'll still have some of the Fall colors left. Glad you were able to get a place in Aug. Its an awesome experience isn't it. It was really neat when my daughter was a crew member in '96..I was down in the Smokies every month to meet her at the trail head and spend her days off with her.No matter how many times I go up to LeConte I am still as excited as I was the first time I went up in '76. Allyson, so glad to hear the blog will continue.. Will make the dreary days here in Indiana more bearable to be able to look at the southern beauty.

Marilyn ,thats really neat to have a reservation every year. It is a wonderful experience! You and your friends enjoy hiking this weekend. I think we are gonna do some hiking in the Hoosier national forest and lake monroe. Last weekend we hiked there and was lucky enough to see a couple of bald eagles over the lake.Seeing nature while hiking is such an awesome thing!

We are excited to hike LeConte for the second time in July 2011! We spent our 15th anniversary September of last year on LeConte and loved it. I was told it was the clearest the mountain view had been in years. Spectacular. Guess I will have to hike it every year for awhile before we can get grandfathered in too?

This is a great picture. I am hiking to the top this Sat Oct 23. I am so excited the colors should be great. I hiked Mt LeConte last year for the first time and loved it. It was the most challenging thing that I have done. I said that I would do it every year as long as I can. It is the most peaceful beautiful place that I have been. I read your blogs daily and look forward to them. Thank you for sharing a part of the beauty of the Mountain with us.

Like so may others that post thoughts here, I check the site daily; It's a part of my routine I can't do without each day. I began hiking in the Smokies in 1953 and just cannot understand why it took me until 2004 to stay at the lodge. I was hooked from that first time on ! My wife and I will have our 40th anniversary this weekend and I'd love to bring her to the lodge sometime, but as she's not the hiker that I am, I don't know if that will ever happen. Still, she might consent to some along some day. I agree that your bridge photo would make a nice one for the wall. Great composition. Not much left in your season; have a good week. If you're at Cliff Tops you can look in a northerly direction and see just a bit of Gatlinburg down below. I just can't pick out Cliff Tops from the town though.
