Morning y'all,

It's a windy morning up top. The high yesterday reached 45 degrees. It was incredibly pleasant in the sunshine, barefoot porch walkin' weather. The low last night reached 21 degrees. It was 27 degrees and overcast at 7am observation. The mountain received no new rain or snow. There is still about 3 inches of crunchy snow up top. I'd still be sure to pack microspikes, there are quite a few tricky spots on the trails with all the melts and thaws we've had lately. Enjo

It's been nearly 20 years since I was there. Coming back before I'm too old to make it is definitely on my bucket list.

Woke to 20-25 mph winds with gust to 35 here in southern middle TN. Hold on tight, it's on the way!!!!

We are up against the TN/KY line and I think we maybe going to oz today. Windy is an under statement.

Michael-Come on back! My Dad hiked it when he was 70, and I always said "if he can do it, I can do it!" So I started last year when I was 61, and didn't know I would absolutely fall in love with it and can't wait to get on that mountain now!

is it safe to assume We can still access US 441 to get to the MTN? Which was should we "go" in? Cherokee or Gatlinburg.
Thanks for the updates, Cheers!

You definitely cant go in through Cherokee, major road outage due to a large mudslide

2/10/2013 05:02:24 am

You can use 441 from Gatlinburg to the Newfoundgap parking lot. That will give you access to the Alum and Boulevard trails. The road between Newfoundgap and Cherokee won't be open until this summer.

Beautiful winter photos...we will be up there on Spring Break...hopefully amidst spring alpine flowers.

I never knew about the mountain until a few years ago and i am 56years old. I wat to get into good enough shape to come and visit just one time before i die.I hear it is a very hard trek and i want to come during the winter time to see it in all it's glory.

Barbara,
I am 55 and have hike LeConte at least once a year for the past 25 years or so. I have hiked it with kids and grandparents. It is hard, but it is not a technical climb. Find some safe stairs and practice starting with 250'. Then 500. . .up to 1500' feet. No pack.
I have hiked in the winter and it is beautiful to be sure. I would not recommend a winter hike for your first hike out. My favorite hike is Boulevard, and I would not recommend that for the first hike out either.
Start training for a late spring hike. Not too hot not too cold. LeConte is crazy beautiful, for many different reasons all year round.
If my schedule works out and the weather cooperates, I'll be hiking Feb 17th.

Barbara, my first trip to LeConte was in May 2009 at age 59 and was tempted to turn back at Alum Cave. However, after a brief rest at the Cave, I completed the hike. Since that time, I've made 13 additional trips to the mountain on all six trils.

I started an exercise program including walking, stationary bike and hiking local trails.

Tomk in SC made excellent points regarding time of year and choice of trail for your first hike.

Barbara, I "discovered" LeConte Lodge in 2009, I was 61 years old, from that point forward I was determined to hike up. In 2010 I secured an overnight reservation, the night before I was to hike, I broke my pinkie toe! I hiked up Alum and down the Boulevard and I have been hiking it multiple times a year since! You can do it, and it is so well worth it!!

Old, what is old? Your age is just a date on the calender to let you know how long you have been around. Don't dwell on the calender, your as old as you feel. Margret Stevenson probable didn't think about her age, witch aloud her to climb Leconte 718 times. The calender tells me I've been around for 47 years, don't feel it though. When I'am on my way to the top and huffing and puffing with 20 lbs on my back, I stop take a break and think of Miss Margret.

Ryan--LA, I like and agree with your comment about OLD. I had the pleasue of meeting Margret Stevenson a few times over the years while hiking up to LeConte. She was a great lady and loved LeConte. When huffing and puffing on my way up the mountian I do the same as you. I stop for a break and think of Ms. Margret and it always seems to give that extra shot of energy to continue on to the top. Ms. Margret and LeConte will always have a special place in my heart and I never climb the mountian without thinking of her. She should be an inspiration to all of us that hike LeConte.

JP, hope you're safe up there tonight. Just heard 441 from Gatlinburg to Newfound Gap is closed due to trees down from high winds!! It's been really windy here today in north AL!

Doesn't matter what age you are, just do it. Sorry I sound like a Nike commercial. That wind up there is going to melt alot or the rest of your snow. Just noticed here, its very windy this morn. Melt snow, melt! I think were getting our March weather a little early.
