Good Morning, It’s currently 42 degree and socked in up top. Our 24 hour high is 42 degrees, with a low of 29 degrees. We received .1” of an inch of precipitation. There is still 3” of snow on the ground. The warmer temps and pending rain will likely melt much of the remaining snow. Expect slick conditions on the trails up top. -- Yesterday… Gliding down the mountain, I was happy to be outside on such a warm blue-bird day. Equally as enjoyable was getting to cross paths with so many great folks! Making good time, I rolled down into Gatlinburg, to check my mail at the NOC. With mail collected, I was already ready to be back up top. The thought of pizza jumped to the front of the line. I couldn’t resist… Back on the Alum Cave Trail, I began the mid-afternoon hike back up the mountain. Moving well, I had the pleasure of chatting with a number of great folks along the way. Keeping an eye on my watch, I knew I was still on time for sunset. I resumed my 3.5 mph pace. Storming into the kitchen, I gulped water and made for sunset. I wouldn’t dare miss it, especially with front row seats on Cliff Tops… Back in my loft... I slept like a content rock. Onward, Seth “Me thinks that the minute my legs begin to move my thoughts begin to flow, as if I had given vent to the stream at the lower end and consequently new fountains flowed into it at the upper." - Henry David Thoreau

Hiking out on Little Duck Hawk was a favorite! Alum Cave Bluff Trail can be regained after descending the end of its ridge.

I traversed that ridge several times from the late 70s into the early 80s. Sometimes back up to Alum and on to the top. Sometimes taking the scramble you mentioned back down to the trail by the creek. The falcon nesting put an end to that. I respected the little chain that was put up back then. A great memory for sure.

Your photo of Eye of the Needle from Inspiration Point is excellent. The contrast of light and shade is amazing. This brings out the Eye into focus as well as I have seen. I would like to share this with hiking friends on Facebook.
