Morning y'all,
The high yesterday reached 36 degrees. The overnight low got down to -2 degrees. It was 12 degrees and overcast at 7am observation. The mountain received 2 inches of new snow, bringing our total to about 3 inches of fluffy goodness. The trails are in pretty good shape. I came up Alum last evening and the snow gives you some pretty good traction on normally icy sections. 441 closed last night and may reopen today. Be sure to check the Park Service's twitter feed for the latest update. I've gotta go play in the pow!

JP I keep rootin for you that you will get the snow that my son and I experienced during the Frankinstorm.........34 inches up top. It was totaly awesome and a life time experience. I am still on a high. They tease me at work when i call off for snow. I tell them i was hiking in it, not driving.

Note that the Clingmans Dome road has been opened by the NPS much earlier this year. Although it has been closed at present as 441 has due to ice and snow.

Me and my son stayed the at the LeConte shelter when the temp was -2 - we had a ball. Very cold, but we had a fantastic hike up Friday via Alum Cave trail, although dangerously icy and hiked in all the snow down Bullhead trail Saturday. The bullhead trail was nearly impassable dur to all the newly down trees. My car is still sitting at the Alum cave trail head.

Hi Mike, is there a tarp on the front of the shelter, also do you know if there is a bathroom available at the lodge, wife prefers those over shelter privy. My son, wife and myself are planning for march 9th hoping we don't have -2 temp. , but sounds like you had a good time.

Glen, sorry for the late response, I just got back from the the mountains today 2/18/13. My phone actually froze! YES, there is a tarp over the shelter opening and a privy just down the hill ~ 50 yard. My son and I had a great time... We love hiking in the winter. There are many blow downs along the Bullhead trail and of course be prepared for icy spots should you elect to go up Alum Cave trail. I prefer the longer Boulevard trail beginning at Newfound Gap and then come back off Trillium. I like longer hikes if you have the time. HYOH, God Bless! Any other questions feel free to ask.
