It was a festive mood on the mountain. Even the guests were having a grand time. The Simmons party decided to have a "Best Hat" competition. The crew had the pleasure of naming the "Best Hat". We picked the santa hat. You can not tell in this photo, but the hat lights up, sings, and dances. It was judges choice for sure. We are still enjoying beautiful, cold days. The high was 42 with a low of 29. The forecast looks as though we are going to coast off the mountain with some spectacular weather. I know you are all looking forward to JP returning. He will begin his second winter blogging on Thursday. Just a few more days and hopefully he will have some winter wonderland photos, or warm mountain photos, to share.

I'm really fretting right now because at the beginning of this year I had reservations to be at the lodge the 18th, 19th, and 20th to close out the season, but I had to cancel them all. That will never happen again. Sounds like a lot of activiity up there which is great and everyone enjoying themselves. I hope all the crew has a good off-season. G'day.

These hat guys were a hoot!! I was cheering for the turkey hat guy, if only his turkey had danced or had lights...lol! I enjoyed my stay there last night so much. It was my first overnight stay, hopefully the first of many more. Allyson, I did not get to meet you. I was trying to track you down this morning but it just didnt happen. I met Chris several times. 1st up on cliff top where he really helped orient me as to what i was looking at. Thanks Chris!! I hiked to the lodge for the first time in the beginning of Oct this year on a day hike & have been mentally pulled to come back ever since. I've drove my family & coworkers crazy talking about it. Needless to say they were happy when I stole a cancellation for last night & got to go!! However, I dont think I will stop talking about LeConte....I cannot put into words how special this place truely is. I have followed this blog religiously since my hike up there a few weeks ago. Thank you so much for everything. The staff was amazing, the food was amazing, it was all amazing. I was humbled to be apart of it & cannot wait to return! Happy Holidays to you all.

Kyle is the person with the turkey hat. He thinks that if the hat gobbles & lays an egg that he might win next year. All of us have vowed to win "best in show" as well

The close of another season is such a bitter sweet time. I know that the crew looks forward to time off but I will miss Allyson's insights and photographs as well as Nathans story telling. At the same time I am very much looking forward to JP's thought provoking prose and literary samples. Last season he inspired me to look up some of the writings, something I never thought I would do voluntarily.

I first found this blog in the winter of 2009-2010 when Doug McFalls was the winter caretaker. The title was different but it was definitely the adventures of living on the mountain during the winter - and if I recall correctly it snowed like crazy that season!

Snowed over 100 inches in 2009-2010 season. Are you and Chris going to run a marathon? Running should be helpful climbing Kilamajaro.

Some comments called Bullhead "impassable." My wife and I took Bullhead down from the lodge on Thursday, November 15. It is not impassable; it is just tough. You have to be able to climb and crawl over, under and through numerous downed trees. All the downed trees are on north-facing slopes, and range in size from six inch diameter to two feet or more. If the weather is good and you want to enjoy the splendid scenery on Bullhead, and don't mind a bit of gymnastics, go for it. Probably not a good idea if raining or snowing.

Allyson,Chris and all the crew who made our stay excellent ..THANK YOU..we were up the 11th the blustery ,lol .night. We will be up again probably in 2014 but might just have to get on another cancellation list for next year! My husband made the comment on the way down that Montana doesnt have the "elfin enchantment" that LeConte & other nearby mountains have.....thats a huge statement for him to say his beloved state doesnt have something! He had previously day hiked up in 2003 when sent to Knoxville from MT for a few weeks ( his first trip south) & was loving LeConte then too! Have a wonderful time away. Looking forward to JP posts too. Our trip was a truly a gift from God...thats another story : )

I made my first hike to the mountain Monday, November 19. I must say that I did not do in very good fashion. However, I made it and was very gald I did. The mountain is beautiful and the lodge is such a unique experience. The staff was wonderful and very accomodating. I made the hike in memory of my Uncle Randy who did from brain cancer last February. He loved Mt. LeConte and hiked it many times alone, with friends, and family. He intorduced my son, Landon, to the mountain and it was his idea that we hike the mountain. Thank you for awonderful time. Comments are closed.
