Finding Solitude on the Mountain

5/3/2013

It has been a beautiful morning so far. I can't tell if this lovely cloud is about to take over our mountain or stay out to the east to make for a dramatic display. It was nice to wake up this morning and see the valley below. It has been a bit on the cool side the past few days. The high yesterday was 49º with a low of 40º. The day hikers were few and far between. I have a feeling that will change for this weekend. All in all, it has made for a quiet mountain top.

Drizzling rain here in North Ga this morning. Looks like a windy, rainy Saturday ahead of us. Hope next weekend has good weather so we can visit the mountain top. Hope everyone has a good day.

A little chilly in Michigan this morning. 47. But amazingly going to be a beautiful weekend. That cloud looks like it could carry some rain in it. Neat picture.

Debi, do you have reservations at the lodge July 4th? Or gonna try to stay at shelter?

Good morning from rainy Florida! Love your photo. It looks so peaceful on the mountain. Does the lodge up top sell lunch sandwiches or drinks like coffee to day hikers? Just curious. I'll be staying overnight in a few weeks and understand what to expect for that, but I'm wondering what to expect if we ever just hike up and back in one day. Coffee would be good!

debnfl-around 12 noon you can get unlimited coffee, hot chocolate, and lemonade for $3-plus a snack bag for $10 that has a lot in it, but not a sandwich. If you order lunch two days in advance(prepaid) from the LeConte office you get a sandwich and bowl of soup, and a no bake cookie that is yummy! You can buy the no bake cookie for $1, which I do every time I day hike up there! They don't mind if you bring your own sandwich either. Have a great hiking day everyone!

Love the picture this morning! Would love to be there instead of St. Louis. Currently 40 degrees and pouring! Can't complain though - Kansas City has snow! What has happened to the weather?

Happy Hiking everyone!

My mother, father, and wife will be hiking up Monday. Is the weather expected to be extreme, with respect to rain, wind, and lows?

Have not made a trip to LeConte this year. Hiked to Ramsey Cascades on Wednesday and Porters Creek campsite 31 on Thursday. Both hikes were a first for me and I will probably use other trails for the first time. Noticed the comments regarding the weather and must complete yard work this afternoon.

Yesterday I did a roundtrip hike on the Boulevard trail and while at the lodge I talked with two young men from Chicago who said they had already hiked three trails that day and were going down the Boulevard trail. I offered to give them a ride back to their car at Alum Cave trailhead. Even though they hiked at a very fast pace, which I was barely able to keep up with, they stopped to clear every stick and limb that they could pick up or move from the trail. Later I thought about how many of us had stepped over or went around these obstacles that these young guys removed, to say the least T was greatly impressed and enjoyed my hike with these remarkable young men.

Hey Doug y I enjoy your comments. I enjoy most everyone's comments. Me and my wife Barb will be visiting June 5 thru the 8. We are going to get in as many day hikes as we can. No backIng this time. Every evening we will be returning to the comforts of the cabin. We will hike up LeConte. It would be an honor to meet Allyson, Chris and any of the crew.

Thanks David C. I am trying to keep them shorter than I am prone to do so as not to bother anyone. I also enjoy the comments posted here, no matter their length. I have got to get a place closer to the Park so I won't have the 3-hr drive I do now to get there. As soon as I get through some business here I'm going to start searching for a suitable location as near the Park as I can find. Finding solitude on the mountain as Allyson titled today's post is precisely what it's all about for me whether it be in the Smokies or any wilderness area. I don't exactly find that sort of solitutde at the lodge, but rather an enjoyable atmosphere with people of like mind and spirit. But I can go in almost any direction during my visits and locate a spot to simply sit idle and soak in my surroundings. I love meeting the people that frequent the lodge, sharing personal thoughts and histories and such. I'd be on one of the trails leading up nearly every single day if I lived closer ! Even now, after a most beautiful morning here in C.KY, I am planning out my next day hikes. It's always a nice day when I can include a route that at least passes by the lodge. Like Norman, I was wondering about the Guest Sightings - - I enjoy seeing them, but I suppsoe it's not something that many visitors and guests are doing this season. Good afternoon all.

Careful, you never know when the Comment Police are watching, my friend.

Marilyn: I forgot to thank you for refreshing my memory. Thank you. I thought that Airport was the road/street leading to the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, but just couldn't convince myself of it, and now that you helped me I remember exactly where that restaurant is, especially after you mentioned that church. I'll be samplng that cuisine the very next time I'm in Gatlinburg. G'day.
