If you have been on the mountain during the past week you have probably noticed some construction taking place. Andrew Nigh, our carpenter extraordinaire, is finishing up work on John and Bonnie's home. We are trying to update some of the crew quarters to make them a little more energy efficient. I know this will go along way on those cold November nights. The new insulation was needed yesterday. The high was 58 with a low of 43. That is cool for August. If this weather trend continues it will make JP, our winter caretaker, a very happy guy. He may finally get his snow this winter.

Like many other readers and guests your comments and photos bring bright moments into my daily routine and I really appreciate all of them. I've stayed in most of the motels iin Gatlinburg over the years, but there's one which is my favorite: The Gatlinburg Inn, constructed in 1937. It's old, but quaint, comfortable, and the gracious lady who owns and runs it can be a wee bit eccentric, but I absolutely love the place for many reasons. Disappointingly, though, they close from Nov 1 thru Apr 1, which limits availibility, but otherwise it's the only place I tend to stay at these days. There are plenty of other nice ones, however. Glad to hear that JP is returning. His daily reports are excellent. g'day

Mrs. Wilma Maples was the "we bit eccentric" owner you mentioned. She passed away this past winter. She was a great lady, a wonderful benefactor to the GSM and to Gatlinburg. She will be greatly missed.

JP's posts during the dead of winter was a great enjoyment. During dreaded days at work, I would dream of the peace on top of Mt LeConte. My adult kids became regular readers of his posts. We will be back just before New Years, so if the weather is not too bad, perhaps we will drop JP off a bottle of Champagne.
