First Day For Guests

3/21/2011

Picture
Food store room at the beginning of the season. I will take a picture as it empties out. It is amazing how much food is in there at the beginning of the season.

Today is the day the guests start arriving. It is always and exciting day waiting for the season to officially begin. The weather is not looking so inviting. It is currently socked in. The low last night was 33 with a high of 44.

Can someone give me Alex's e-mail? I wanted to get reports from his European hiking, but when I went back and looked for it, I can't find it.

Alex's email is [email protected] We got a first email a couple days ago. He is leaving for Paris on 3/23. Said we might not hear again for awhile. If you send me your email address I'll forward the one we got. My address is [email protected]. If you don't get in touch with him to begin receiving his emails let me know and I'll forward any we receive until you do get in touch with him.

Wow...to be back in Michigan looking at this picture gives me a wonderful feeling. My heart is as full as the food storage room! Thanks for allowing us to help with the airlift. What an amazing experience with an amazing group of volunteers and crew members! Happy First Lodging Day!

Hiked up on opening day last year with my son Landon and we have longed to return everyday since. Couldn't make it this year but we will be there in spirt. Hope to hike up for the day later this year if we can make it to the area. Enjoy the mountain and eat an extra cookie for Landon.

That is amazing the amount airlifted and stored away for a season on the mountain top!

Is there a mid season airlift for resupplies on things that cannot be packed up the mountain or does this one handle it for a complete season? Also, how many people do you host in a season with all these provisions, if you do not mind me asking?

Thank you for supporting this blog, it lightens my heart every morning to keep up with you all on the mountain.

Man that looks like a lot of work.

Oh my goodness. Somewhere within all of those supplies is my lunch for my very first hike to LeConte in June. Do you use fresh or canned chicken for the chicken salad sandwiches?

Jerry
3/21/2011 07:51:00 am

It don't matter what kind of chicken they use. When I get to the top of LeConte I'm so hungry I could drink the juice from one of them cans of chicken!

Ewwww Jerry.

Nice pictures of the storehouse. Can't wait to see it dwindle on the blog. How exciting the start of the new season is. Hope to see you all end of summer. Until then I'm stuck in Ohio. GO BUCKEYES!

Can't wait to see you all next week Wednesday! We have been following the blog for about a week now. Thanks for all your hard work getting everything up and running. We are hoping the weather improves soon.

LOL! Jerry you are a charming. I know some widow women in Coral Gables I could introduce you to.

What is a buckeye anyway? One of our neighbors here in North Carolina told me that if I put a buckeye under a dog's head while he is sleeping, and then put the buckeye under my pillow while I am sleeping that we will both have the same dream. Is that true?

Tonya- I agree that looks like a lot of work!

Jerry- ewwwwwwww lol

Juanita, it's true, you'll both dream that your head hurts! ;)

Allison- Thanks for the picture,, I love seeing the "inner" workings of the lodge!

Don't be so grossed-out ladies. You eat the chicken that's been soaking in the juice don't you? Besides, it's rich in sodium, just what your body needs after a long sweaty hike. Plus, it's chicken flavored and not just salt flavored. Maybe you'd prefer canned tuna?

Rachel

@ sandee...
I needed that!

@ Regina...yes, go Buckeyes!!

Allyson...great blog and pics! One day, I will make it up there!

What happened to that delicious beef pot roast you served in the past?
However, anything is good after the hike. See you in June.

I cannot imagine trying to figure out a grocery list for the season. I have a hard enough time just planning a few meals at a time for my family of three - LOL! Thanks for a peek at how things work "back stage"!

Preparing for an April trek to LeConte as a day trip. Today, hiked to the Hensley Settlement in the Cumberland Gap National Park via the Chadwell Gap trail. Approximately 10 miles with side trips and an estimated elevation gain of 1,900 feet over a 2.9 mile section.

Last week, hiked approximately 7 miles in the Red River Gorge with the final mile on pavement back to the parking area.

Prior week, hiked in the Daniel Boone National Forest in southern KY. About 8 miles over a trail with easy changes in elevation.

Should hike LeConte ASAP before expending remaining energies on other trips.
