It was a cold day on the mountain. The high was 34º with a low of 21º. We sold a lot of hot cocoa to cold day hikers. Around dinner time, we witnessed the first flurries of the fall. Lesley guessed the date for the crew snow pool. The funny thing is she is at the beach with her family and missed this cold spell and the flurries. I am pretty sure she will be able to experience winter on the mountain before we hike down in November.
Ruthie is getting to experience what it means to run this place during cold weather. There are a lot of things that could freeze like the water pump, the flush toilets, the crew shower room, and the lines to the kitchen. One thing the management is responsible for is to make sure these things to do not freeze and break. She is going to be a pro at tearing down a water pump before she leaves LeConte.

What changes are noticed with plant life after the first freeze up top? 21 seems like a pretty good freeze..

I think it's going to be another brutal winter over much of the U.S. -- not looking forward to it, to be honest.

The funny thing is, people keep "discovering" Elkmont (when those of us who live in the area knew about it from the years of our childhood). There was a similar story in a newspaper about a year ago--unfortunately I can't locate the exact time or place of publication--I think it was a Nashville paper. The author of the article made this miraculous discovery of...Elkmont. Hilarious!

I discovered it two years ago -- should have done an article on it, I guess. Another lost opportunity. : (

Saw that this morning, clicked on story and couldn't believe it was about the Wonderland....when we first started going down to the Smokies we would always go over there sit on the front porch and have coffee and sometimes lunch...it has been 30 years but really over 100 years....don't think so!

I read that too! I had to laugh. Oh, and he was checking out the Wanderland hotel too! The one that has been torn down for some years now. I found that entertaining as well. I wondered if he "discovered" the campgrounds?

The funny thing is in the guy's video of discovering Elkmont, he missed the bigger discovery. You have to watch close but I believe I saw bigfoot.
