Fun With Fungi

9/8/2014

Picture
Judging by the feed back, I think Ruthie is going to do a fantastic job. She hiked down last night for a few days of rest and relaxation. Her days seem to be a little busier now learning all of the ins and outs of lodge site manager life. She is getting the hang of it quickly.

Now, I have another quiz for you. I found the fungi in the photo above and I am trying to identify it. Does this look familiar to anyone? I am sure it will be my project for the day. I would love to hear what you think it is.

It is starting out nicely this morning. The high yesterday was 68º with a low of 50º. We did get some rain throughout the day yesterday, but at the end of the day, the guests were treated to a beautiful sunset.

So, despite our generally contemplative and appreciative nature, today, it would appear, we are Ruthless.
Fortunately, Allyson is imputing some fun into fungi. I don't suppose that makes her fungal.
Norman, I think something is terribly wrong! :)
Allyson, as your season winds down, I have to tell you how much I appreciate your photos and remarks. Thank you.

Hi Allyson
I had hoped to meet you before your time at the Lodge was up but you were off on the night I was there. So just wanted to say good luck with Olde Virden"s Red Hot Sprinkle . My mom really liked them.

At frist glance, looked like scrambled egg! Tom you might be on to some thing. Ruthless is some kind of women; doing two peoples jobs! She needs a break..

I can't identify that fungi, but it does look strikingly similar to something that was growing on the inside of my shower curtain, awhile back.

(Yeah, I'll go away, now.)

Yellow brain fungus?

It is always delightful to get back on this site after a few days away and catch up on everyone's comments. I couldn't agree more that there are almost as many different opinions about the lodge and all its aspects as there are readers and posters. It'd be terribly boring if we were all the same ! In particular, the emphasis on the fact that there are certainly many levels of expertise of the readers and guests is, to me, a very big and interesting variable. I believe that the experienced hikers are considerate towards the inexperienced ones with their advice, and that makes this a truly great and useful blog site. And perhaps equally as important, if not more so, is the unwavering and excellent advice that the lodge crew members offer to everyone. I am especially appreciative of the kind wishes regarding my knee surgery; many thanks; it went well. One of the very first things that I thought if post-op was when I was going to be able to get back up the mountain to the lodge ! I'll be able to do that more easily now. It's a great place. G'day

Glad it went well and to have you back!

Norman in GA...my first thought was scrambled eggs too, but that was before breakfast so maybe I was just wishful thinking...

Doug, good to see you back among us. Will look on your site for your thoughts on your knee replacement.

Welcome, Ruthie, as the soon to be head honcho on the mountain. Looking forward to your perspective of life among the richly blessed to be living on LeConte.

First time poster, long time follower. Is it jelly like? This looks like it could be Orange Jelly (not the scintific name) which is in the Tremelles Order. It grows around coniferous logs. See it from time to time hiking around the Ozarks.

I'm guessing Clavariadelphus truncatus. Common name Flat-topped Coral.

That looks like yellow earth tongue.

Those are yellow marsmallow Peeps. Probably discarded by an irresponsible
hiker on the mountain.
