Great Commute!

Rhododendron at Inspiration Point
The hike back up the mountain was extremely pleasant. The weather was somewhat cool and the rain held off. The lodge was socked in when we got to the top, but the clouds moved out and made way for blue skies. The high yesterday was 62. It was great seeing the rhododendron blooming at lower elevations. I love that time of the year when they line the trail and you are walking thru a canopy of rhodo.

My son and I hiked to Trillium Gap and on to Brushy Mountain last year about this time, and something, (Rhodo?) was blooming between Trillium Gap and Brushy Mountain. Gazillions of blossums, it looked like someone had spent a fortune on a wedding or something. The short trail between the Gap and Brushy Mountain is very much like a tunnel, with blossums all around.

If some of the couples that proposed could pick a SAT in May for a rustic wedding, or at least pictures, that venue would be off the hook.

@Doug - The are I believe that is known as Inspiration point is at the turn below you make the final climb up to the bluffs on Alum Cave trail. There are all kinds of flowers there! One of my favorite spots along the trail. You can see Little Duck Hawk ridge from there and if you are lucky, the falcons.

Terry,
You are correct. Doug, it is the outcropping of rocks that you pass when you make that last big turn before you get to the bluffs. It is a great place to relax and watch the Peregrine Falcons.

Oh yes, the mountain laurel is in full bloom!

Thanks. I thought that was where it was; same place the squirrels venture out for a handout; hard not to feed them, but I never do. Allyson, your comments on bears are right on ! Wish more visitors to the Park would follow these guidelines. It is esciting to see a bear in the backcountry, but for me even more pleasing to leave it as it is, knowing that I've had little influence on it. G'day

Just a quick note to say I enjoy reading your posts. I'll be backpacking in the park during the Memorial Day holiday and found your site when researching weather data for the park. Thanks for the daily posts. They are very informative.
