Great Pumpkin Carving

11/1/2013

A bowl of mashed potatoes, a bowl of beef and gravy, a box of wine ( mountain burgandy), and a can of evaporated milk.
It was crazy day on the mountain. The wind blew all day long. The rain finally came around dinner time. We received almost of an inch of rain over night. The high yesterday was 50º with a low of 42º. I am sure we will hear stories of trees being down all over the mountain.

The crew had a fun time carving pumpkins and the guests enjoyed voting on their favorite one.

Doug, let's have one of their cat head biscuits and some apple butter.
Nice carvings from the crew. I can't believe this season is almost over.
We had some major winds at my place last night, I will agree there will be some downed trees on the trails today. Hope everyone uses caution today.

Hey Ronnie: Gee, my ears fooled me again this morning ! Or was it simply my ever-present desire to be at the lodge, especailly in the present weather we're having; Yeah, cathead (is it one word or two !?) biscuits and a generous application of apple butter would be delicious, much better than the Spam sandwich I fried up a little while ago !! I used to bake sourdough bread every four or five days, and I might try to get that started again this winter. G'day

My guess would be the llamas - - I sure would be hard pressed to carry even a small pumpkin up the mountain !

With all of the wind last night, I was thinking of you guys up on the mountain. Seven years ago (Oct 16, 2006) my son, one of his college room-mates and I were up there during a dramatic wind storm. The windows in the dining room kept blowing open during dinner, and it sounded like a hurricane outside our cabin all night long. Needless to say we got very little sleep, but as always the staff put out a great breakfast to send us on our way down the mountain. A park ranger had to escort us out of the park from the Alum Cave trailhead, since the park was closed due to all of the wind damage. As I recall, they said winds were clocked at 100 mph at Clingman's Dome. Not unlike the blizzard survivors of last year, it was the most memorable trip we've ever made to Mt. LeConte in the years since!

What a beautiful day today is! The sky is not completely blue but from my part of the world (that is North Knox county), the mountains are unusually clear today. What a view. I bet the lucky folks who are on the mountain today are really having an exceptional day up there. For a while around 1pm, the sun was at such an angle that the individual ridges and valleys were showing more clearly than in many months. How wonderful it is to live here and get to see such a spectacular view. Love it!!!

Hope the wind has died down up there. It has down here in the valley.
Have a great time "ya'll"!

It took me a little while to see the llama in the pumpkin but once I figured it out it's amazing! Good job! What a fun time of year it would be to be up there. Maybe next year.
