Dramatic skies put the day to rest. The crew has been enjoying these September days. The high yesterday was 60 with a low of 44. The chill in the air has the crew guessing about the first snow fall. We have a game we play where we try and guess the first snow day of the fall. The past couple of years have brougt flurries in the early part of October. It will be interesting to see if that trend continues. I know JP is keeping his finger crossed for an epic snow fall this winter.

Did anyone predict the snowfall in May 2011? That made our trip special since we are from south Mississippi where we rarely see snow at all. Y'all have a wonderful day!

The cool morning gave me the opportunity to put on my new LeConte sweatshirt and enjoy the paper out on the deck watching a beautiful colorful display as the sun rose over the horizon.

As long as we have some snow up top on nov. 9th, my bunch will be happy. Hiked up last nov in the snow and single digit temps. That would be fine with me this year as well.

Weather prediction is definitely not one of my strong points, but I feel that we may be in for another mild(er) winter; Wasn't it two or three winters ago when the accumulation of snow on the ground at the lodge was around 48" !?

We hiked up Wednesday and stayed, the weather was perfect! We did see a black woolybooger on the trail. If the old timers are right, it should mean a black winter as well.

After posting my earlier comments, I discovered an old screen saver in a file drawer and installed it on my laptop; It scrolls slowly from one beautiful scene of the Smokies to another and is quite nice to look at for a while. One of the scenes was of a place called Tom(s) Branch Falls and I had to get out my two best waterproof trail maps {these are great to have} to try to find where this falls was; I finally located it from a site on the internet; But in peering over my maps for an hour or so I discovered many interesting place names withn the Park I had forgotten about or had never heard of. "Mouse Creek Falls" and "Midnight Hole Falls" along Big Creek Trail in the N.E. part of the Park below and to the south of Cammerer Ridge: "Turkey Flyup" on the Kanati Trail S.E. of Newfoudn Gap; and "Place of a Thousand Drips" on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail [a very nice drive]; There are too many to list here as I don't want to abuse the privilege of posting my comments. For all my years of hiking in the Park, I was whittled down a notch this morning as I guess I had becoome a we bit cocky with my knowledge and experience, Nonetheless, I love the Park and the Lodge and love to share what I do know about them. I think as soon as I log off I'm going to pack a few items and immediately drive down to the Park and hike out to see a couple of these long-forgotten sights !! That's what it's all about isn't it !? And Heather, I loved your description of the "black woolbooger" !! G'day all.
