Happy Labor Day

9/2/2013

Picture
Sunday was a wishy washy kind of day. We started with clouds that turned into a bright blue sky. A few hours later, we were experiencing thunder storms, which quickly changed back to blue skies. We finished off the day with more rain and a thick layer of clouds hanging low on the mountain. The high was 62º with a low of 52º. The crew had a fun night of grilling out and celebrating only 90 days left of the season. It has been a tough summer with all of the rain and they have done a spectacular job in not letting it get to them. Usually, September brings bright blue skies and fall like temperatures.

We were on Rainbow Falls yesterday between Alum and Bullhead and saw a couple being followed by a stray dog. It appeared to be a Lab-mix with mostly black coat and a white chest. It was very timid and the couple said it simply started following them while they were hiking. We were pretty close to the lodge when we encountered them. Any idea what happened to the dog?

I saw that same black dog up in the lodge! It was wandering around and appeared to be friendly. We thought it was somebody's dog. I don't know where it went the next day though.

Morning to all up top, Grey sky's are going to clear up so put on a happy face. I think that's how the song go's. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned what took place 73 years ago at New Found Gap today! What would the Leconte Lodge look like if it wasn't that special day??? Anyone care to chime in. Anyone else Know???

That was the day when FDR spoke at the Rockefeller Memorial, officially dedicating GSMNP. I was just looking at a photograph of that ceremony recently.

Oh no, a stray dog near the lodge! I hope someone can get some help for the poor thing :-(. Any update Allyson?

That dog probably belonged to the couple it was supposedly following; they didn't want to admit it was theirs because they knew it was allowed. It was a pretty dog, though. Perhaps it, too, will make it on the Ellen Degenerate show.

You are so right , I to have passed a couple who had a dog that was 20 to 30 feet in front of them . They clamed it was a service dog. No vest or leash on it though. Some people think rules don't apply to them

When I encounter those people who think they're above the rules, etc., it gets me really irritated, to say the least. I'd get pretty upset to be spending quality time at the lodge and discover someone who had brought along a dog ! I have nothing against dogs, but not on the mountain ! A fellow I know, who has very extensive experience in the Park hiking, etc., has told me many accounts of running into people with pets out on the trails. I began a short trek up the A.T. beginning at Newfound Gap last year and nearly stepped into a large "doggie pile"; I met the people with this large animal, a big Rotweiler I think it was, a few mintues later jauntingly walking back to the parking lot - - made me quite irritable as they seemed to think that they owned the trail or something !! Really, folks, there are better places to walk and relieve their pets.

Good Morning,
I will be making a trip up on my birthday, October 2nd, with 2 friends. This will be one's first time. We are all so excited. I have made this wonderful hike up 12 prior times, but never on my birthday. One of my all time favorite things to do!!

Our third hike up and each time there is always something new and different. That's what makes it special. We took the Boulevard Trail and saw lots of bear scat, some were fresh, I think (you can still see the berries). Just glad we didn't encounter one along the way! But, we did see a deer along the trail and that was something else. Lots of fog on top too. It was a good Labor day hike.
