Happy Mother's Day

5/11/2014

Picture
The colors were vivid this morning. The rain has stopped and the skies are clearing. We did see a bit of a reprieve yesterday afternoon. The sun came out and warmed the hikers for a little while. Another front moved in around sunset. As of this morning, Rainbow Falls trail is still closed. We will let you all know as soon as we know of any changes. The temperatures were still rather pleasant, even with the rain. The high was 54º with a low of 45º. I think today is going to be a good day for checking out the wildflowers around the mountain. I hope all of you mothers out there have a wonderful day. We appreciate you. Happy Mother's Day from the LeConte Crew.

Happy Mother's Day to you Alyson, I know you are a great Mother and friend to the crew this year as well as years past. Still hoping to get a visit in this month so I can enjoy some ramps,( you probably are unaware that one year for Halloween I was "Rampbo", not pretty !) I hope you have a great and beautiful day on top of the world ! I absolutely love the pic Chris took yesterday morning, God is the greatest artist ever !

In a way, many of us are all "Children of the Mountain". For all the years I've hiked in the Smokies, all the various experiences I've had, all the wonderful people I've encountered, all the dreams I've had, and all the plans I maintain there is much that I do not have knowledge of. Some of this lack is my own fault and probably a wee bit of laziness, and some I attribute to living so far away from the Park. But there are those who live much further away who love the Smokies and the lodge as much as I do if not more, and perhaps know more than me. I cannot read enough about it, its history, and even those tall tales about events and people connected to the place ! Recently there was posted an account about hiking cross-country up and down various creeks and little hidden valleys and these are especially interesting and entertaining for me. I can write at far greater lengths here about the lodge and the Smokies, but I refrain from occupying so much space here and reserve my lengthier comments for my own site. One thing that is particularly special and valuable for me are the beautiful photos that are posted every day here. I wish I had a nickel for every person I've mentioned the lodge to. Every now and then I actually meet someone who has been there. Good evening all.
