"Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy." - John Denver

It was a John Denver kind of day yesterday. Chris and walked up to Cliff Tops and soaked up some vitamin D. It is always good for the soul. I have heard there are a lot of  wildflowers out on Bullhead. About 1 1/2 miles from the top. That will make for a perfect little hike on the next sunny day. Yesterdays high was 46 with a low around 40. The sun is out for the moment. Hopefully we will have a repeat of yesterday.

@ Donnie from yesterday: The red-cheeked salamander, also known as Jordan's salamander, is found in the Appalachian mountains exclusively in southwest Virginia, western North Carolina and northeast Tennessee. It inhabits the forest floor and is active on the surface at night when the humidity is high and temperatures are mild. During the day it occupies burrows under stones and logs, or tunnels formed by rotted roots. This species is normally found above 3000 feet and is currently threatened by habitat destruction. It typically grows 3.5-5.0 inches long. They mate in the fall and deposit a single spermatophore with great success.

Beautiful pictures from cliff top. Glad you guys had a nice sunny day for hiking. We had a beautiful day here in Indiana also. We hiked awhile in our Hoosier National Forest and it was very nice but for us nothing compares to hiking in the Smokeys!

Made our first trip up to the lodge Friday and survived the storms Friday night. We enjoyed beautiful weather on the way down Saturday morning. I am looking forward to a hike back up to see the beautiful sites from the top but still had a great time this past weekend.

Hi your pics are very beautiful, we have been following all season as we are booked for this Sunday night at the lodge and are very excited. This is our first time in the Smokeys, and we will be carrying our two boys ages 7 months, and just over 2 years (he may hike a mile or two on his own). We are trying to figure out how many heavier layers (eg sweaters/jackets) to bring for them. Weather report shows sunny and 80 high / 53 low for Gatlinburg for both Sun and Mon and am wondering if what (if any) coorelation between Sun/Rain/Wind status and temperatures between the top and Gatlinburg? Any advice would be very welcome! Also if their is any advance weather forecast resources for the top please share.

Hussein, take about 15 degrees off the Gatlinburg temp forecast. You're talking over 4000 ft elevation difference. It's a different world from g'burg.

Hussein, try this web address. Gives the weather for three elevation at Leconte.

I'm putting in a request for a repeat of this for next week. Specifically Mon - Wed. My husband and I are coming up next Monday and staying 2 nights.

Tony- thanks for that link, what a great resource!

Rodney- according to the forecast in Tony's link you are spot on with your calculation!

Interesting how the high and low on top of the mountain are much closer together than at the bottom (2-5 degree swing vs. 15-25 degree swing)

Can't wait till Sunday hope the forecast holds true!

Do the two peaks in the top photo taken from Cliff Tops have a name? Last August when I was there the clouds were billowing up between them and then blown off to the north. I was hoping to caption my photos with a name of the two if they have one.
