Morning y'all,

It's yet another gorgeous, clear day up top. The high yesterday reached 46 degrees. The low was 28 degrees. It was 34 degrees and clear at 7am observation. The mountain received heavy sunshine all day, which led to about 3 inches of melt. The current snowfall up top is hovering around 2 inches. I am sure the trails are still in pretty rough shape with the thaw and refreezing cycle. Please be sure to pack Microspikes or some sort of traction devices. Enjoy the day!

It was 28 this morning in Cosby!! Your TV looks just like ours. We have been TV free for 7 years now. Too much to look at and read to spend time in front of the boob tube. Great having you back for another winter J.P. We have retired to Cosby and I never get enough of our mountains here. May try a LeConte day trip this winter, got to test my winter hiking skills.

That thawing and refreezing cycle had 441 closed last night and had to find alternate route to return to N.C. Hope that shining sun has continued the thawing process. Lots of activity at Alum Cave parking lots. Beautiful day for a climb.

OK! After reading the comments all day yesterday about the song everyone else seemed to know, I finally realized that I am so much a geezer that I was grown way before that song came out and so did not become familiar with it. I am familiar with the name Van Halen but not with which songs are his- nor did I ever pay much attention to the words of songs of that era. Oh well!!

Like the rest of the visitors to this blog, I love the beautiful pictures, the great words penned (typed?) by Allyson and JP and their substitutes (when those two are on their days off) and I love the mountains and look forward to seeing what is happening each day - first thing and then later in the day too.

It's fun to see what the "commenters" have to say and it seems like you are all my friends. I'd much rather see this site than all the stuff people put on Facebook!!

Have a great day everyone. Happy Hiking! (or whatever your day holds for you.)

Seems like maybe it wasn't Van Halen after all ??? Well what do I know? I still like to read the musings of the blog regulars and enjoy the sunny day it was today and see the beautiful pictures. Maybe we'll all have a holly jolly December and learn a thing or two from JP's daily reports.

jean d: Your comments were some of the nicest I've read lately, and I do enjoy everyone's ideas, comments, and expressed thoughts here. Not long ago I tried both Facebook and Twitter, but I just couldn't get used to either; perhaps I'll use them later once my own website is fully functional, incorporating them into my site, etc. I, too, relate to Hugh's comments -- since I took an early retirement I've shed myself of several "material" things, stuff which simply doesn't matter any more or that I no longer have use for nor enjoy. Getting some new backpacking and hiking gear to replace my old (but still quite useful) stuff is the most appealing prospect for me these days; I especially need some new "underlayers", etc. NOC will soon get even more of my business.

What plaque at Cliff Tops !?? When was it erected ? There's supposed to be a USGS brass benchmarker up there giving the elevation of 6555 ft according to the topographic map for that area; What does the alleged plaque say !? This interests me.
